Future Gamecocks arrive to Under Armour game
December 30, 2017
ORLANDO, Fla. — Three members of the 2018 South Carolina recruiting class are playing in the Under Armour All-America Game.
The trio, Jaycee Horn, Rosendo Louis and Hank Manos all of whom signed National Letters of Intent earlier this month, will have a chance to represent the Gamecocks this week, but they’re also in position to recruit a couple of the top remaining 2018 targets, including Dylan Wonnum and Quay Walker.
Starting around 12 p.m. on Saturday, the All-American prospects are scheduled to start arriving to the Orlando World Center Marriott for check-in.
A quick look at who SpursUp Surveillance will speak with throughout the day:
South Carolina signees
Dylan Wonnum update
Wonnum will take four official visits in January: Auburn is the only one that’s set for Jan. 12. LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee will also host him.
South Carolina and Auburn are recruiting him the hardest. The Gamecocks have two coaches working him: Will Muschamp and Eric Wolford.
“They need me,” Wonnum said of the Gamecocks. “They need an [offensive tackle]. I can come in and start early, if I do what I need to do.”
What stands out about South Carolina?
“I would say the coaches. Coach Muschamp and coach Wolford. … Both of them, they’re cool guys to talk to. They talk to me a lot,” Wonnum said. “They hit me up every day.”
Hank Manos update
Manos will spend time playing both center and guard this week, though he’s expecting to play only center when he arrives to South Carolina next month.
“I always thought that guard was an easier position and center was a more demanding position,” he said. “Center requires more leadership skill and more, I guess more technique, because as soon as you snap, you’re working with one hand.
“But guard, especially whenever they run a 3-man front with a head-up nose, you do a lot of reading, a lot of looking at linebackers, looking at d-linemen, trying to figure out where you need to go, so one’s more mental and one is more physical.”
Manos will step right into the competition for the Gamecocks starting center spot, which Alan Knott vacates after Monday’s Outback Bowl.
“[Offensive line coach Eric Wolford] said there’s competition, obviously, there’s always going to be competition in a college setting, but there’s nobody that he doesn’t think that I can out-effort, out-tough, so that’s my goal, as far as playing,” Manos said. “Just try to out-work, try to out-tough. That’s what I learned at Chapin. We always said we’re going to out-work ’em, out-tough ’em.”
Rosendo Louis update
Louis was the first South Carolina signee to make his way into the media room. I asked what pushed the Gamecocks over the top for him on signing day.
“It was just that I had a relationship with the coaches and Florida State lost their defensive coordinator, well, they didn’t know who was going to be one. I just felt at home at South Carolina,” Louis said.
Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson “was the main guy, from the start,” among the Gamecocks coaches.
“He made me feel at home,” Louis said, “Someone who was from my area recruiting me and he knew how to come at home.”
When asked if Robinson was going to stay at South Carolina, Louis said, “Yeah.”
“He told me that he was going to stay at South Carolina.”
