GAME 3 - Doug Kingsmore Stadium

Sunday March 01, 2020 1:30 PM

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The University of South Carolina baseball team (7-3) looks to take the series against it's bitter in-state rivals Clemson University (8-2) in Game #3 Sunday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium (capacity 6,524) in Clemson, SC. The first pitch is set for 2:00 PM. The game will be streamed by ACC Network Extra, and will be broadcast on The Game 107.5 FM with Derek Scott, Tommy Moody and Drew Meyer on the call.

The series' first two games were a roller-coaster ride of performances by the two teams. Clemson took the opening game at Founders Park 7-1 on superb pitching by it's starter plus overwhelmed hitting by the Gamecocks lineup. The Gamecocks stormed back in the second game played at neutral site Segra Park in Columbia, the home of the New York Mets Class A Minor League Columbia Fireflies, and won 8-5 after jumping on the Tigers 8-2 through 7 innings, behind strong pitching from Thomas Farr (2-0). Farr pitched 5.0 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 runs - 1 earned - striking out 3 and walking 1.

The Gamecocks' bats also came alive, producing 12 hits led by 3B Jeff Heinrich who went 2-3 and drove in 3 runs. 1B Wes Clarke also went 2 for 5 including a towering solo home-run that bounced off the scoreboard. Bryant Bowen, Brady Allen, Andrew Eyster, and George Callil also all had 1 RBI in the game.

Brett Kerry - returning to the bullpen after starting the season in the Saturday starter's slot that Farr now occupies, earned his first save of the season, pitching 0.2 innings of  shut-out baseball.

PROBABLE PITCHING ROTATION
Sunday
South Carolina Brannon Jordan (Jr., RHP) 1-0, 1.64 ERA, 11.0 IP, 3 BB, 18 SO
Clemson Spencer Strider (So. RHP) 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 5.2 IP, 1 BB, 9 SO

Gamecocks open the game at the plate - go 3 up and 3 down, with 2 strikeouts. I hope we didn't use up all of our offense in just one game, because we needed every one of those runs yesterday....

Brannon Jordan starts with walking the lead-off Clemson batter, and hitting the next batter. Bad start. The base-runner on 2B advances to 3B on a fielder's choice to get the 1st out at 2B, and then scores on a fly-out RBI but there are now 2 outs. Then Jordan gets a strikeout for the final out, but Tigers lead 1-0 going into the 2nd inning.....

Top 2nd Inning, Clemson leads 1-0:

Wes Clarke singles, but then Brady Allen hits into a double-play to clear the bases, 2 outs. This would be impactful as the inning plays out:

Dallas Beavers follows with a single, then Andrew Eyster doubles to left field to put Gamecocks on 3B and 2B, 2 outs. Noah Campbell - moved down to the 8-spot for the game, then HITS A 2-RBI SINGLE UP THE MIDDLE!!!! Gamecocks take the lead, 2-1. Campbell then reaches 2B on an error from the pitcher attempting to pick him off, then George Callil strikes out to end the side for the Gamecocks.

We take the lead and score 2 runs, but have to wonder what the inning would have looked like minus that double-play grounder. But we're tagging the Clemson pitcher, so that bodes well for us as the game progresses....

Gamecocks lead 2-1, bottom 2nd inning

Basically Clemson's top 3 batters in their lineup are solid to great hitters thus far, and one of those is one of their regular weekend starting pitchers, Davis Sharpe - the bottom 6 batters however have the best batting average of .238, and 4 of them are at .200 or below. We need to try to contain those top 3, and attack the others, and Jordan should be OK.....

Bottom 2nd inning, Jordan struck out the first Tiger, then walks the next two trying to get to cute with painting the edges of the plate, when he should have just attacked them with heat down the zone. But he induces the next 2 batters into fly-outs to retire the side without any damage and leave the Tiger base-runners stranded.

Gamecocks 2-1, top 3rd inning

Gamecocks still lead 2-1, bottom 6th inning. Graham Lawson in now for Jordan, who is in position to get the win despite struggling with the strike zone all game long. Jordan's numbers are 5.0 innings, only 1 hit, and 1 run (earned), with 4 strikeouts but 5 walks. It's looking like a nail-biter of a game today.

Lawson making things very tough for himself to start - gives up a single to the first batter he faces, then walks the next one. The single was off of a high pop-up, that by the time Heinrich fielded it, he had no play to 1st as the batter was standing there looking at him. Two Tigers on the bases, 0 outs....

Now Lloyd is coming in for Lawson.....

Bases loaded, 0 outs now......not for our hitters, either. Our bullpen are bad bad bad......

Shallow fly ball to left not deep enough - 3B tags and off he goes - Eyster catches, throws to Callil, who quickly relays home to Beaver  - he's OUT!! 1 out, bases still loaded. We're not out of the hot water yet......

wait a minute....they are reviewing the play. It was definitely an out at home, so don't know what they are looking at. OHHH the batter passed the base-runner at 1B, who was waiting to tag at 1st once the ball was caught to advance. IT'S A DOUBLE-PLAY!! So, runners at 3B and 2B, 2 outs now.....

Lloyd strikes out the next batter, for the final out!! That's a great inning for the Gamecocks, with some luck and bad execution by Clemson thrown in. Bases loaded and 0 outs, and the Tigers can't get a single run out of it!! HA HA!!!!

Gamecocks 2-1 Top 7th Inning

Bottom 7th.....

Lloyd still on the mound. He gets the first batter out on a strike out, but gives up back-to-back singles to the next 2 batters. Now Cam Tringali coming in for Lloyd.....

Tringali's first pitch hits the next batter. Bases loaded, 1 out. Here we go again.....our pitchers cannot pitch strikes, and I seriously doubt that they are coached very well to.....

Next Clemson batter hits a sacrifice fly to center, and the runner on 3B tags and scores. Game is tied 2-2, Tigers on 2B and 1B, 2 outs...

2 RBI double by next batter gives Clemson the 4-2 lead. Boy, our bullpen.......

5-2 now, on another RBI single. Brett Kerry - who pitched yesterday - comes in for Tringali. It's still the 7th inning. I hope Brett has got some energy today....
