The baseball team has looked good so far. Our bats have been coming alive when they needed too. Coach Mainieri has been substituting to give more players some playing time. And him and Coach Rooney have been rotating the pitching staff a lot. The ERA for all 13 in the first 4 games is at 1.59 with a lot of K's.
They have a weekend series against Milwaukee starting Friday and then next Tuesday they play Garner-Webb all here at home.
After those 4 warm-up games, they start the series against #14 Clemson.
Those games will be there, then in Greenville, then here.
I believe that will be the games that will talk more about how good our team might be this season. However, currently Clemson is only 2-1. They were #8 but they got run-ruled by Ole Miss, 15-5 on Sunday. I was surprised they are still ranked so high. They might be a very good team.
March 14th, we start the SEC schedule. Currently there are 9 SEC teams in the top 25. We are not ranked yet. I would love to be 9-0 when we play Clemson and then win that series. They have what should be 4 easy games this weekend and then a game against Winthrop before we meet up so they may still be ranked.

So how do you think our Baseball team will be this year?

I feel Coach Mainieri and his staff will get this team in shape and win a bunch of games this season. They brought in a lot of talent from the portal, and it was great for Coach Mainieri to keep Coach Lee here. He has always been good as a hitting coach. I went ahead and bought some tickets in advance before they start having mostly sell outs.

Still have my Gamecock baseball T-shirt they gave out at the last home game vs. UGA last year.

The amount of real estate development near the river in Cayce the last 10 years has just been phenomenal.

I remember back in 2015 I ran a half marathon that finished by going down that riverwalk and by that picnic shelter on the way to Brooklyn-Cayce HS.
It was beautiful running all the way down the Columbia Canal and crossing that bridge to get to the riverwalk. I can only imagine all the improvements that may have happened this last 9 years. Back then, some of that neighborhood looked pretty run down. I hope they are improving that HS too. Their stadium was pretty rough.

Then again, I remember when they just had a dirt parking lot a block from the baseball stadium by that Chinese restaurant. I have not attended a baseball game in a long time. Look forward to getting back there again. I see on google that place is still there. but there is also that big, paved lot there now. I do not remember that being there before, but it may have been.

Lost pitcher Eli Jerzembeck for the season due to a stress fracture of the elbow won't help our pitching depth. Same elbow he had Tommy John surgery on last year. But losing pitchers for the season seems to be yearly occurrence for us.

I know baseball in general is looking for 95+ on fastballs, but this need for speed seems to be killing arms. Not sure when baseball decided there wasn't a future for Greg Maddox arms and control pitching.

Maybe college baseball needs to move away from composite bats and use wood bats. I know that's a much bigger expense, but maybe it could save some arms.
