SCOUTING THE AGGIES

  • Texas A&M is led by first-year head coach Buzz Williams.  Williams was an assistant at A&M under Billy Gillispie from 2004-06.
  • The Aggies are 8-7 on the year, and 2-2 in league games.  They have posted SEC wins over Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.
  • In home games A&M is 7-2.
  • The Aggies most recently suffered an 89-85 overtime loss at LSU on Tuesday.  Five were in double figures in that contest, led by 20 points from senior forward Josh Nebo.
  • Nebo paces the team with 12.1 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per outing.
  • Junior guard Savion Flagg adds 11.3 points per outing and paces the team with 2.3 assists per game.
  • In the SEC stats (overall games), A&M is fourth in scoring defense (61.6 ppg), second in field goal percent defense (38.4%), and second in 3-point field goal percent defense (28.7%).
TIPOFF NOTABLES

  • South Carolina collected its first win of the 2020 SEC campaign on Wednesday night in heroics, as R-freshman guard Jermaine Couisnard sank a long 3-point buzzer-beater to give the Gamecocks an 81-78 upset win over No. 10/12 Kentucky at Colonial Life Arena.  The win was Carolina's second this season over a top-10 opponent.
  • Couisnard led four Gamecocks in double figures with a season high 26 in the win over UK.  TJ Moss added 10, his first double-figure outing of the season, Justin Minaya scored 11 and sophomore forward Keyshawn Bryant had a season high 15 points.
  • South Carolina suffered a 56-55 loss at Tennessee last Saturday in its first SEC road contest of the season.  Senior forward Maik Kotsar concluded a monster week with a 17-point, eight-rebound performance, and r-freshman guard Jermaine Couisnard led all bench scorers with 15.
  • In home games this season, Carolina is averaging 71.2 points per outing and 41.1 percent from the field.
  • Since the beginning of the 2016 SEC campaign, Carolina is 27-11 (.710) in conference home contests.
  • South Carolina suffered an 81-68 loss at home to Florida in its SEC opener on Jan. 7.  Senior forward Maik Kotsar continued his strong play, pacing the Gamecocks with team highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
  • Kotsar (18) and sophomore forward Keyshawn Bryant (14) both turned in season highs in points vs. Florida.
  • In the month of January, Carolina will host just three SEC matchups and will be on the road to face five league opponents.
  • In its nine wins, the Carolina defense is holding opponents to just 35.6 percent from the field and 28.1 percent from 3-point range.
  • Martin is 33-44 (.428) against ranked opponents as a head coach. His teams have four wins over opponents ranked in the top five, and two wins over opponents who are ranked No. 1.
  • The Gamecocks are 3-1 on the road this season, and are 25-34 (42.3%) in road contests dating back to the 2014-15 campaign.
COMING UP NEXT

  • Carolina is back on the road next Wednesday when it travels to face No. 4/4 Auburn.  Tip time at Auburn Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET with Tom Hart (play-by-play) and Andy Kennedy (analyst) on the call for the ESPNU broadcast.

Having Couisnard at PG gives me more confidence and less apprehension going into games.   I  was impressed with his command of the position against the long, quick guards of UK.  Especially for a freshman.   I feel the PG position is in good hands now.   The issues now are getting Lawson out of his shooting slump, and team FT shooting.  I think Lawson will eventually be fine.   I'm not so confident that the FT shooting will get a lot better.   But I hope it will.

Good points. This is a must win game for any chances left for the NCAA's, beside winning the SEC Tournament.

Time to establish some consistency.   Hope the confidence and aggressive play carries over from the 2nd half of the UK game.

So far so good. Being down three guys. 13-10 good guys.

Gamecocks showing off on defense.

Defense 20/15 good guys under 10 to play in 1st half.

They look really good today.  Things finally seem to be clicking and the flow is definitely better within Cousinard at the point.   Lawson hopefully coming out of his funk.

Where did all those threes come from? WOW! Just glad we didn't have to make FTs at the end. Hope they will continue to play this good. Go Gamecocks! :1586002973_animated-smileys-sport-069(1)small:

Bolden was on fire today. 5 of 7 from 3pt and had 6 assist. Just glad him and Couisnard got more minutes in (34 and 37). Lawson (16 min.) was shooting better today but still absolutely zero assist. I don't know why he is that way. A Guard is supposed to get assist, not try and do it all himself. Really glad the team looked a whole lot better today. But still had a lot of fouls against them. Giving them 41 foul shots is too many. Thankfully the D was really strong when they didn't foul.

We shot the ball great today from three.  Good percentage on FT.   The problems today were fouling and turnovers.   But, very happy to get the win!   Very happy to see shots go in for our guys.   Minaya, and Bolden were excellent.   Couisnard  was good except for his turnovers.   Kotsar got 10 rebounds.    I'm very happy.   Hope Bryant is going to be OK for the next game.

An awful lot of fouls on our part - if it wasn't for the huge disparity of free throws by Texas A&M, the score would have been more like a blow-out win for us. Texas A&M lived off of those free throws - we hit almost as many 3-pointers as they hit field goals. Thank goodness we were a hot-shooting team tonight. Now we're 10-7, 2-2, and won a road SEC game that we were in strong position to win. We have a tough road game this Wednesday at Auburn, although they haven't been playing well lately. Lets see if we can keep up the strong scoring.....
