McClendon no longer Gamecocks offensive coordinator, Werner off USC staff

Dec. 01, 2019

Multiple outlets are reporting McClendon has been stripped of play-calling duties after two seasons. Those same reports have QB coach Dan Werner out after two seasons. A new offensive coordinator will likely have a background in quarterbacks.

South Carolina is also moving on from strength coach Jeff Dillman.

McClenson’s second offense struggled mightily, ranking outside the top 115 nationally in yards per play and points per game against FBS competition. Muschamp’s job status had also been in question, but a few weeks before the Clemson game saw school president Robert Caslen say he was excited to see Muschamp back in 2020.

McClendon’s current contract runs through 2021 at $1 million a year. South Carolina will pay that out each year, minus whatever income he’s paid at his next job.

McClendon joined South Carolina’s staff when Muschamp arrived in 2016. He was a wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator with Kurt Roper. He played a role in developing top-40 NFL draft pick Deebo Samuel and recruiting four-star receivers Bryan Edwards, Shi Smith and OrTre Smith.

After Roper was let go following the 2017 regular season, McClendon was elevated amidst reports he was connected to an opening at Tennessee.

His first season was a prosperous one for the Gamecocks offense. With Jake Bentley throwing to Samuel, Edwards and Shi Smith, the Gamecocks ranked 22nd in the country in yards per play and averaged more than 30 points per game. At year’s end, he was linked to another coordinator opening at Tennessee along with several other jobs, and got a raise to a $1 million a year and an extension.

But between injuries and other factors, this season did not go as many in the program planned. The opener saw one of the worst offensive performances in the past few years. Bentley got hurt that day and was lost for the season, while the offensive line was shaken up after that game. Injuries shelled the offense, especially at the right tackle and the pass catching spots.

This leaves Muschamp looking for the fifth offensive coordinator of his head coaching career. He had Charlie Weis, Brent Pease and Roper at Florida, and then Roper again before McClendon.

At least that part is over with.  Now to bring in somebody worth a cuss.

Sources indicate the next offensive coordinator will NOT be a current staff member, contrary to message board rumors.

I do not expect McClendon to be on staff next year. He’s has been demoted/given the opportunity to find new employment. I fully expect a new WR coach to be in place when the Jan. recruiting period opens.

Good decisions made today. I can live with that. Now let us see if we can get top-notch OC along with the other pieces.

Muschamp and Tanner to an extent have to redeem themselves and make a quality hire for the OC.  This is a big opportunity for the both of them to change perception and start righting the ship.  Will they and are they capable of drawing in the right OC?  Will Muschamp allow total control?

The only OC/QB coach I'd have any excitement for is G.A. He's the guy who developed Connor & Dylan and helped develop our running game during that era.

He is a proven coach...and proven at USC & could be the guy to save Muschamp's job.

Good that change has come quickly, but to be honest the loss of Werner was a shock to me. He was a highly respected QB coach. But it's better to do it fast and harsh like pulling off a bandaid.

My perception is BMac was not a known entity last year, but this year opposing DCs knew his tendencies and shut his offenses down and he had no Plan B or C.

He didn't see this coming because he's never been an OC before.

One of the media guys pointed out during the ASU game that Will thought the injuries didn't matter as far as the offensive planning went, but they said BMac told them it did indeed matter a lot.

Injuries shouldn't matter if you're developing talent the way you should.

Werner must have been in conflict with Will and BMac enough to get canned.
