ConwayGamecock - September 2, 2019
NOTE:
This game will have people from both programs watching the developments of Hurricane Dorian, as the storm continues its North-Westerly path up towards the United States’ east coast. Dorian is projected to have moved past South Carolina well prior to Next Saturday’s scheduled game, but it is a high Category 5 storm as of Sunday Night with winds reaching 185 mph, so it could leave devastation in its wake should it fall in-state. As of this Preview’s writing, Charleston Southern University Administration has issued this announcement:
So, we’ll continue to watch this and provide updates with any new information regarding this week’s game.
Who: Charleston Southern (0-1) vs South Carolina (0-1)
When: Saturday September 7th, 2019
Kick-off: 12:00 pm ET

The Match-up
Not much of a rivalry here, as this will be the first contest ever between the two programs. Charleston Southern, from the FCS Big South Conference went 5-6 in 2018, which included a 53-6 loss to SEC Florida. In 2017 they went 6-5 and lost 49-0 to SEC Mississippi State. But those were different teams.
Autry Denson is in his first year as a CFB Head Coach at CHSO, after spending the past five years as the Running Backs Coach at Notre Dame. However, this match-up will have eyebrows on both teams’ coaching staffs raised, as Denson brings an offensive system to CHSO that he describes as “Air Raid Offense with an attitude”: South Carolina just got through sampling a version of the Air Raid offense against North Carolina, and they didn’t like it too much.
Key Match-ups In The Game
As mentioned above, the Buccaneers will feature an Air Raid offense, and the Gamecocks got all they could stomach of that offense last week. This does not mean that the results will be anything like what happened against North Carolina. The talent level and depth should be substantially different between the two rosters, but hopefully the Gamecocks treat CHSO as if they are Alabama or Georgia coming to Williams-Brice, and give their best effort.
Against Furman – the first and best opportunity we have of seeing just how Charleston Southern’s offense will work – the Buccaneer’s offense struggled. The team had a total of 18 first downs and 65 offensive plays, and gained 377 total offensive yards. Their starting QB Jack Chambers finished 18 for 25 for 192 yards, 0 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. CHSO got their scoring from their rushing offense, which gained 185 yards on 39 carries, and scored two touchdowns.
South Carolina’s defense will need to respond better to the Charleston Southern Air Raid attack then they did to North Carolina’s, and hope that last week's game didn’t give CHSO’s offensive coordinator any ideas on how to exploit our defense. Furman’s own defense sacked Chambers 5 times: it’s not out of left field to expect our own DL to have similar opportunities.
Against Furman, CHSO’s own defense struggled mightily. They allowed 509 total yards, 369 of it on the ground in 40 carries (9.2 ypc), and 5 of their total 6 touchdowns. Furman did not throw the ball much – only 23 times, but completed 17 of them for 140 yards and a touchdown, with 0 interceptions. Again, CHSO’s DL simply cannot be to UNC’s level, and the Gamecocks RB corps of Tavien Feaster, Rico Dowdle, and Mon Denson should be able to exploit it at least to the level of a Furman, one would think.
South Carolina Will Win If
Well, we need to play much better than last week. The team needs to open Williams-Brice in front of a vastly supportive home crowd fan-base, with some energy and intensity and outward appearance of actually wanting to win a football game, and win big. It needs to start and finish the game with some emotion as well – have some attitude that they were embarrassed a bit in their last game, and place a large percentage of that blame on Charleston Southern’s shoulders. Play as if they have an awful lot to prove – to themselves, their fanbase, and CFB Nation as well. Because frankly, they do.
And play against the Bucanneers as if if they don’t score 100 points for the game, then it’s an automatic loss regardless of what CHSO scores. Of course, we don't have to score 100 points. But play the game as if we do. Play hard all game long - leave everything on the field. That's the only way this team will rid itself of the stench from last week's game, regardless of what the final score is.
Do that, and we stand a good chance.
Charleston Southern Will Win If
We’ve seen this before. Even with FCS opponents, teams coming into our home stadium, and out-efforting us, and showing that the game means more to them than it does to us. And we’ve not been happy with the results. The Bucaneers cannot be coming into this game feeling good about themselves. At least the Citadel came into our game in 2015 with a 7-3 record, and was one of the top teams in their conference. They came in with confidence, and we were a dead team walking.
Charleston Southern is 0-21 all time against FBS opponents. They are 5-6 against the Citadel, 6-8 against Coastal Carolina. Even 10-14 against Presbyterian, for goodness sakes. They are a combined 0-21 against South Carolina State and Wofford. So pretty much, the Buccaneers winning will depend on the Gamecocks more than it will on themselves.
