OK, so those pesky Catamounts from Cullowhee come down to Columbia and mess with our bowl hopes. It's happened before, as The Citadel was also a Southern Conference member.

However:

1) Western Carolina is 2-8 on the year;

2) Muschamp, not Elliott, is the head coach;

3) The team has obviously improved from a year ago;

4) The Gamecocks are 4-0 all-time agains the Catamounts.

I gave my prediction in the other thread, but will repeat it here.....we cruise to an easy win, give plenty of guys a chance to play, and "play with house money" against Clemson....

South Carolina 42, Western Carolina 10

What say you?

South Carolina vs. Western Carolina Game Preview

When: Saturday, November 19 – 4:00 p.m. ET
Where: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, SC
TV Broadcast: SEC Network

South Carolina went into Gainesville and played a tough game against Florida, but the offense could not do enough, and the Gamecock were defeated 20-7. The running game gave no help to quarterback Jake Bentley, as 43 yards were all the Gamecocks could muster on the ground.

A 49-21 loss to Furman put the Catamounts at 2-8 on the season. Quarterback Tyrie Adams threw for 295 yards and a touchdown while running back Detrez Newsom found the end zone twice on the ground.

What To Know About South Carolina

Since taking over the starting job, Bentley has been what the Gamecocks needed under center and has shown that he could be a star in the SEC soon. Look for him to air it out more and get some reps against the mediocre Catamounts passing defense.

Defensively, South Carolina is allowing just 21.1 points per game, and will be able to keep Western Carolina from doing too much offensively.

What to Know About Western Carolina

Newsome leads the Catamounts with 916 rushing yards, but the Gamecocks will have to look out for quarterback Tyrie Adams, who averages 243.7 yards through the air. All of that leads to an offense that struggle at scoring, averaging just 23.4 points per game. That is a problem when the defense gives up 35.2 a game.

Did you know that the actor Terrence Mann teaches musical theater at Western Carolina. The only reason I mention this is because Mann, like myself, was born in Ashland, Kentucky. It is a town of about 21,000 in the northeastern part of Kentucky, and part of the tri-state area where Kentucky, West Virginia and Ohio all meet. Other famous people (other than myself, of course) include: Billy Ray Cyrus, The Judds, and Chuck Woolery. You are welcome for this information.

Advantages

Offense: South Carolina. Bentley is getting better each week.
Defense: South Carolina. A staple of Will Muschamp is a tough defense
Special Teams: South Carolina. Gamecocks average 42.22 yards per punt.
Coaching: South Carolina. Muschamp seems more at ease in his second head coaching stint.
Intangibles: South Carolina. Win and a bowl game awaits.

Matchup To Watch

Jake Bentley vs. Expectations

Not so much this game, but heading into the offseason and next year, how will the young man handle everything?

South Carolina vs. Western Carolina Betting Odds

Spread: -30.5
Over/Under: 46.5

South Carolina vs. Western Carolina Prediction

This is a game where the Gamecocks will be able learn what some younger players are able to do, or so you would think considering the talent difference. Bentley will be able to put some yards and points up, and South Carolina can start looking at possibly pulling the upset against Clemson next week.

South Carolina vs. Western Carolina Score Prediction: South Carolina 41, Western Carolina 10

South Carolina versus Western Carolina: Three Keys and a Prediction

You know it. I know it. The rest of the fanbase knows it.

Saturday could be a really neat day to be a Gamecock fan.

This weekend’s matchup versus the Western Carolina Catamounts represents the game that could make the Gamecocks bowl-eligible in their first season under Will Muschamp. It also represents an opportunity turn a seemingly doomed season into an above average campaign.

Why is it important? because, just four weeks ago the Gamecocks were reeling and the staff was stuck asking themselves a million questions, now they stand on the verge of what could be generally described as a successful return to the head coaching gig for a coach that’s been unfairly typecast as a hard-working but ineffetual head honcho.

How do they do that? I have a few ideas:

STOP THE RUNNING GAME - What do UMass, MTSU, and Marshall have in common? They’re all ranked ahead of South Carolina in rushing defense this year. While it is no secret that the Gamecocks have been a little suspect against the run this year, it has been especially apparent against 4-6 yards-per-carry guys. They made UGA look like an M1-A1, they managed to allow record numbers against Kentucky’s running backs, and they have given up more than their fair share of big running plays this season. In order to take care of business this weekend, the Gamecocks are going to have to contain the Catamounts record-setting runner, Detrez Newsome.

SCORE POINTS - It is also no secret that the Gamecocks have been a little lacking when it comes to scoring points this year. In fact, they have retaken the throne as the least productive offense in all of college football. If Carolina is going to notch its sixth win this weekend against a lesser opponent, they’re going to have to score more points than the other team, and we have by no means proven that we’re capable of that. Injury issues across the board are going to further hamper the team’s ability to rack up points, but look for the ground game to establish momentum and lead the way.

THIRD DOWN - please. Please. Please. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE. Find a way to get off the field (on defense) when faced with a third-down scenario. It doesn’t matter if it’s third and short, third and a million, or third and in-between, this team has to absolutely figure out how to ramp up the intensity and make the plays necessary to prevent the other team from moving the chains when they absolutely have to.

Prediction - So, nothing I’ve ever predicted this season has gone well (except the things I’ve predicted correctly), so I’m presenting this to you with a grain of salt. This weekend, the Gamecocks get it done and pave the way for a potential trip back to prominence.

Gamecocks 38 - WCU 13
