GAMECOCKFANATICS PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Gamecocks vs Buccaneers
Final: South Carolina (1-1) 72 – Charleston Southern (0-2) 10
A dominating win for South Carolina, who sorely needed some feel-good results today, against an out-matched Charleston Southern. True freshman QB Ryan Hillinski – who took over today for the Gamecocks in place of the injured Jake Bentley, was solid in his first official action as a collegiate player, and led the Gamecocks to their home-opening win in Williams-Brice Stadium, and their first win of the 2019 season.
The Charleston Southern team plays at the FCS level, so we all knew they would have their work cut out for them. They also had their game week preparation disrupted by Hurricane Dorian, which dislocated the team from their home practice fields. South Carolina made the good gesture of letting them use our facilities during the week to prep for the game.
For a Gamecock team that racked up 775 total yards of offense – 493 yards on the ground – and 72 points, there will be plenty of players of note to spotlight for today’s game. Let’s begin:

OFFENSE:
QB Ryan Hillinski, South Carolina: a true freshman earns the top offensive honor for the 2nd week in a row, but this time he represents the good guys. Hillinski finished 24 for 30, for 282 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT., and despite that one pick showed excellent accuracy all over the field. He threw to 9 different receivers, and never looked flustered.
(Honorable Mention: The entire Gamecock RB corps: the top two RBs on the depth chart – Rico Dowdle and Tavien Feaster – wasn’t exactly chopped liver today. They combined for 16 carries for 152 yards (9.5 ypc), with 2 TDs coming from Dowdle. But then the reserves stepped in after the halftime, and things only heated up more. Mon Denson (9 carries, 118 yds, 1 TD) and freshman Kevin Harris (6 carries, 147 yards (!!!), 3 TDs (!!!) blew the game wide open. In total, 493 rushing yards and seven (7) rushing touchdowns!!! Both are program records)
DEFENSE:
Tie – DB Cam Smith and DT Javon Kinlaw, South Carolina: Smith, a freshman, led the defense with 6 total tackles, while senior Kinlaw recorded only one tackle unofficially, but it was a tackle for loss, and was also the only QB sack the defense recorded. CHSO did not have a lot of offensive plays, so the Gamecock defense didn’t have a lot of tackle opportunities, but they were still pretty effective overall.
(Honorable Mention: no honorable mention with two players tying)

OFFENSE:
When you lose a game 72 to 10, there won’t be a lot of good moments to find. Perhaps the best was when 3rd-string freshman QB Ross Malmgren. Malmgren came into a hopeless situation, and he was against mostly reserve Gamecocks on defense, but Malmgren completed 11 of 13 passes for 77 yards and a passing touchdown.
(Honorable Mention: RB Ronnie Harris)
DEFENSE:
DB Cody Cline: a freshman, Cline led the Buccaneers with 7 total tackles. The CHSO defense overall had 0 tackles for loss, and 0 QB sacks on the day
(Honorable Mention: DB Tavian Montgomery)
