GamecockFanatics Prediction thread and preview
Sept. 16, 2021
Both teams are looking to stay undefeated on the season, and move to 1-0 in the SEC standings. Let’s take a look at the Gamecocks’ odds for an upset this weekend.
Game time: 7 p.m. ET, Sept. 18, 2021
Venue: Sanford Stadium, Athens, GA
Where to watch: ESPN
Season record
South Carolina: 2-0
No. 2 Georgia: 2-0
The Georgia Bulldogs are not East Carolina. Hence why Georgia is nearly five touchdown favorites as it begins SEC play.
“They had 20 returning starters coming back off last year’s team,” said Beamer on the Paul Finebaum Show. “We knew what to expect. We prepared our guys for it all along. For me, it was just learning what a bunch of fighters we have on this team.
“I think there’s a lot of teams in college football that would’ve lost that game; being down 14-0 early, turning the ball over as many times as we did in the first half. Obviously, we know that Georgia is not East Carolina. We’ve got an unbelievably huge challenge this week, but I did learn that we’ve got a bunch of guys on our team that will never flinch.”
The Bulldogs have won five of the last six meetings coming in, going 4-2 against the spread. But if you’re hoping for some hope in the form of South Carolina, the home team is just 1-4 straight up in the past five.
For that to happen, whomever the starting quarterback will be -- Stetson Bennett or JT Daniels -- will need to be an interception machine and commit an absurd number of turnovers. Head coach Kirby Smart isn’t sure who will be under center Saturday. Bennett is dealing with lower-back issues after his record-breaking performance against the UAB Blazers last Saturday, going 10-of-12 for 288 yards and five touchdowns.
Daniels, the incumbent starter, is healing from an oblique strain that forced him to sit out the UAB game.
Not ideal for QB 1 and 2 to be on the injury report, but the Georgia offense will be just fine for as long as that defense stays healthy. This is the same Georgia defense that held the Clemson Tigers to three points and recorded seven sacks in the season opener. They literally play like Dawgs.
While South Carolina has put up 33 points per game this season, Georgia isn’t Eastern Illinois or ECU. Georgia is a perennial power that is prepared to run over teams with its tenacious defense and will likely destroy any opponent in front of them.
Gamecocks will win
Luke Doty, who many speculated would play this past weekend, should finally be healthy enough to suit up for the Gamecocks under center. Reserve Zeb Noland has played okay in his absence, completing 26-of-46 attempts for 335 yards and five scores, but Doty brings another element with his ability to run. Georgia does have a question mark at quarterback, with starter JT Daniels missing last week with an injury.
In his only appearance of the season, the Bulldog offense was held scoreless, albeit against one of the nation’s better defensive units in Clemson. Daniels is expected to be back this weekend to face the Gamecocks. Gamecocks Will Win
The question now does Georgia have a quarterback? Starter out JT Daniel along with Stetson Bennett backup. So who steps in Carson Beck played late vs UAB and only hit four of his ten passes with a touchdown and a pick. Carson Beck stepped in late and only hit four of his ten passes with a touchdown and a pick.
Gamecocks had their hands full vs. East Carolina in a close battle-winning 20-17, but the defense did a great job against a dangerous offense that was supposed to crank it up through the air with all of its veteran talents. Instead, the Gamecocks allowed just 152 yards through the air and 116 on the ground.
The defense leads the nation in third-down stops giving up just 2 conversions in 24 chances – with a line that was supposed to be one of the big strengths for the new coaching staff, and it is. This has to be kept close by the defense because in order for the Gamecocks can win.
Dawgs Will Win
The Gamecocks offense sputters and does not go anywhere.
The Georgia quarterback Carson Beck steps in and plays well or Daniels and Bennett are both just healthy enough for one of them to potentially step in and shine but it’s the D that’s been otherworldly.
Clemson has one of the five best teams in college football, and it managed a grand total of two rushing yards and 180 in all.
UAB is probably going to win the Conference USA title with the best team yet under head coach Bill Clark, and it got absolutely nothing to work with 174 total yards in a 56-7 Dawg win.
The Gamecocks turn it over three times, couldn't move the chains all that well, and needed a late score to push past an East Carolina team with a bad defense.
Players to watch
If the Gamecocks’ offense wants to have a productive day, it’s going to need big numbers from leading receiver Josh Vann. He has 143 yards and a touchdown, but only seven catches. Noland will need to find him often.
Georgia: Jermaine Burton is the other big-play receiver that’s not named Brock Bowers. He has 103 yards on five catches this season; his longest being a 73-yard score.
Statistical leaders
South Carolina:
Passing: Zeb Noland -- 335 yards, 5 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: ZaQuandre White -- 136 yards, 1 TD
Receiving: Josh Vann -- 143 yards, 1 TD
Defense: Brad Johnson -- 12 tackles, 2 sacks
Georgia:
Passing: Stetson Bennett -- 288 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT
Rushing: Zamir White -- 108 yards
Receiving: Brock Bowers -- 150 yards, 2 TD
Defense: Nakobe Dean -- 2 sacks; Adam Anderson -- 2 sacks
Way it should go
Georgia will present a tough task, as the defense has yet to allow a touchdown this season. The Bulldogs have given up 10 points over their first two games combined, and seven of those came on a fourth-quarter interception return by UAB with the game well in hand.
That being said Georgia's defense just plans out good. But the Dawgs have banged up quarterbacks and missing receiving weapons just to keep the Gamecocks in the game. if the Gamecock is able to run, QB Zeb Noland or Luke Doty don't turn the ball over, and if they can keep Georgia's offense from off-balance enough the Gamecocks will keep the game close and have possible chances to pull off one of their biggest upset in years..
