In his first 12 months as head coach at South Carolina, it appears that Will Muschamp has been on his best behavior.
Coach “Boom” hasn’t had a sideline blowup and the white board market in Columbia, S.C., has yet to take off. However, there’s still a chance that a fat, bearded, sleigh-driving white guy has the final say whether Muschamp and the Gamecocks have been on their best behavior in 2016.
Below are a series of events that would be the worst-case scenario for South Carolina’s 2017 signing class.
Jamyest Williams doesn’t sign
In the moments after Williams announced his commitment to South Carolina, one thing was made very clear: The 4-star cornerback would take official visits to other schools, not just South Carolina.
Williams followed through with that promise earlier this month and took an official visit to Oklahoma.
Less than two months until signing day, there’s no word yet if he’ll take others. Georgia, one of his finalists, figures to be in the mix for a visit. The Dawgs are hot after two of Williams’ teammates from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., one of whom, Tony Gray, is also considering South Carolina.
But even if Williams does see another school or three, the Gamecocks still have the best chance to sign him in February, just as long as defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson doesn’t take off for another job.
It certainly helps that the Williams camp has consistently claimed that the commitment is firm.
Hamsah Nasirildeen flips to FSU
Jay Graham just won’t go away. The former South Carolina running backs coach, who’s now on the staff at Florida State, continues to press for 4-star safety Hamsah Nasirildeen.
Like Nasirildeen, Graham is from Concord (N.C.) High School, and that connection has helped keep the Seminoles in the running.
Nasirildeen took an official visit to Florida State for the Clemson game. Interest hasn’t wavered since. Earlier this month, during the contact period, Graham paid Nasirildeen an in-home visit.
Fortunately for the Gamecocks, Nasirildeen isn’t sure if he’ll be able to take another visit to Florida State before signing day. Plus, he hasn’t used an official visit to South Carolina.
Proximity to home helps, as does the relationship with Robinson, who has played an important role in Nasirildeen’s recruitment.
