Gamecocks’ interest appeals to 4-star DE Jacolbe Cowan

May 06, 2018

‘A lot of love’ from South Carolina

Several prospects from the state of North Carolina’s Class of 2020 are already listed among the best in the country. Included in that group is Jacolbe Cowan, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end from Providence Day School in Charlotte.

Cowan, who’s rated by 247Sports as a 4-star and ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect from the state, already lists close to 30 offers, including Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and South Carolina.

South Carolina had him on campus in late January, the same weekend 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge (Concord, N.C.) took his official visit.

“USC was really good,” Cowan said. “They always show a lot of love. Never had a problem with USC, as far as a visit. I always feel welcome. They tell me, each time I come down, I’m always welcome.

“Coach [Will] Muschamp, [we] have a pretty good relationship. And, also, Coach [Lance] Thompson, we have a great relationship as well.”

Cowan (6-5, 250) is ranked as the No. 37 overall prospect in the Class of 2020.

“South Carolina has made a lot of progress. … South Carolina is definitely on the come-up. They have some ball players as well, a great coaching staff,” he said.

This spring, he hit the road for several visits, including Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame. Stops at Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Miami are in the works for this summer.

Looking to schedule official visits

Four-star defensive tackle C.J. Clark, one of North Carolina’s top 2019 prospects, still sports a top-5 list that includes South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Tennessee.

For him, not much has changed on the recruiting front since SEC Country saw him in April at North Stanly High School in New London, N.C.

Clark, however, is in the process of setting up a few official visits in June. Could one be scheduled for South Carolina? That’s up in the air at this point.

A commitment to one of his five finalists might be announced before the end of summer.
