Gamecocks’ OL options in 2018

March 29, 2017

O-line numbers

With a pair of offensive linemen on board to sign with South Carolina in 2018 — LaMarius Benson and Hank Manos — the Gamecocks have three coming off the books after this season: D.J. Park, Alan Knott and Cory Helms. A fourth, junior guard Zack Bailey, will be eligible to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft.

From this vantage point, it appears that South Carolina’s 2018 offensive line haul will include at least one or two more prospects. We’re not quite ready to close the book on a third interior lineman since that’s where all four of the players on the current roster play.

Some of those targets include 3-star guards Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.), Warren Ericson (Suwanee, Ga.) and Ollie Lane (Corryton, Tenn.). All three have been on campus within the last couple of months.

Two of the more notable tackle targets are both 3-star prospects: Maxwell Iyama (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Jerome Carvin (Cordova, Tenn.). Iyama visited South Carolina last week and Carvin is scheduled to be on campus for the spring game.

Four-star athlete Gavin Schoenwald (6-5, 225) walked away impressed after both of his visits to South Carolina, the most recent of which was earlier this year for junior day.

Shoenwald, who’s listed as the No. 22 athlete in the Class of 2018, is being recruited by the Gamecocks as a tight end. He recently told Phil Kornblut that he could be back in Columbia this weekend for the spring game.

“Ever since my first visit there, me and my dad were really absolutely blown away by everything,” Schoenwald said. “I really try to envision myself spending four years of my life at a place, and South Carolina was checking all the boxes.

“I’d say definitely near, if not at the top, for sure, and they probably will be towards the end as well.”

Auburn, Duke, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt are also receiving heavy interest from Schoenwald, who attends Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy.
