Gamecocks' ‘definitely in the picture’ for hometown quarterback
Nov. 06, 2021
“They are definitely a program that shows a lot of interest,” QB DeQuandre Smith said Friday after the Vikings’ 32-24 win over Nation Ford in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. “Coach Gray came to the game tonight to watch me play and I look forward to going to the game (Saturday) night.” The Gamecocks offered Smith back in February as a defensive back. At the time, Smith was set on playing quarterback in college but has softened that thinking a bit. He hasn’t ruled out playing another position for the Gamecocks.
Other schools on the top of his list are Temple and Georgia Southern, and both of them like him as a quarterback. He was supposed to take an official visit to Temple this fall but will have to reschedule. Smith has taken an official visit to Georgia Southern, but the Eagles are in the middle of a coaching change. Former Southern Cal coach Clay Helton was hired this week, and Smith said he is supposed to talk to Helton this weekend. Smith plans to sign in the early period in December and enroll in January at whichever school he chooses. “I want a university that wants to win and I am a team player, so I want a place I could call home,” Smith said on things he is looking for in a school.
247Sports Composite rates Smith as a three-star prospect and No. 20 in the state. He is in the midst of a big senior season for the Vikings, who will play Spartanburg in the second round of the playoffs next week. Going into Friday’s game, Smith was 132-of-181 passing for 1,380 yards, 14 touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 368 yards and eight scores. Against Nation Ford, Smith had 296 yards of total offense and ran for four touchdowns in the 32-24 victory. “DQ is that guy. If there is a better quarterback in the state, I want to see them,” Spring Valley coach Robin Bacon said. “Halloween was a couple days ago but if you take off his shirt, there is a big S in the middle. He is a superman and that is the kind of plays he makes every game. He is a winner and whoever gets him as a college coach is going to be very lucky because they are going to get a heck of a player.”
