The Opening invitee on South Carolina
With an invite to The Opening finals in hand, 3-star G Jovaughn Gwyn listed South Carolina as one of four schools that’s emerged as a favorite.
Duke, North Carolina State and Wake Forest are also in that mix.
“I’ve been thinking June or July, but I might get it over with at the end of this month,” he said, when asked about a commitment timeline.
“Depending on if any other schools say they’re going to offer me.”
For now, West Virginia is his only other Power 5 offer.
The Gamecocks last had him on campus for a SpursUp recruiting event in April. For the 6-foot-3, 290-pound prospect from Harding University High School in Charlotte, N.C., the visit went well, in part, because of the interaction he had with the coaches.
“We got to be 1-on-1, more personal with them. Rather than talking about football, we got to talk about other stuff,” Gwyn said.
He added, “This time, I got to see more who they are as people. They seemed more natural about it, like they’re not trying to feed you something that’s not true. More of what they were saying was true, you could tell.”
Offensive line coach Eric Wolford spent a good portion of the day at his side, along with the other offensive line recruits.
“He’s smart. He’s intelligent. He knows what he’s talking about. He seems real chill. He’s just chill,” Gwyn said.
A trip to N.C. State is up next this Friday.
According to the 247Sports composite, Gwyn is ranked as the No. 47 guard in the country.
Also on campus
Four-star S Trey Dean, who was sporting a pair of South Carolina pants Sunday at The Opening regional in Charlotte, N.C., also visited Columbia for the SpursUp event.
“I just put them on,” he said of the pants. “I rep a lot of schools. I’m 100 percent open.”
But South Carolina is very much in the mix, along with Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, UCLA, Texas and Oregon.
Dean, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect from Dutchtown High School in Hampton, Ga., wants to narrow his list in June before announcing a decision at the end of that month or at some point in July.
“The coaching staff, their relationship with me. … Playing style and coaching style, does it fit me? Academically, does it fit me? On and off the field, who is showing me the most interest,” Dean said, when asked about factors he’ll consider.
South Carolina has positioned itself well for the No. 24 safety in the Class of 2018.
“I like Will Muschamp. I like that he coaches [safeties] and he’s produced a lot of defensive backs in the NFL, and that’s where I want to be,” Dean said.
He added, “He’s a defensive-minded guy, so I know it’s a great scheme. The defensive all-around guy has a great scheme. His defenses, all-around, are great.”
Dean said many of the same things about defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson.
