Tuesday’s Practice Report

COLUMBIA, S..C. (April 10, 2012) – The University of South Carolina football squad returned to the Bluff Road practice fields on Tuesday afternoon as it begins its final week of spring ball.

Following the practice, head coach Steve Spurrier reminded fans about the Kids Day, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, prior to the spring game. “We’ve got seven or eight speakers – our players, and some of our senior players – Alshon (Jeffery), Stephon Gilmore will be here to say a few words. Hopefully we’ll get a good crowd out here at 11 o’clock.”

Coach Spurrier continues to be impressed by the play of walk-on Jared Shaw. “Jared Shaw is making more plays than Connor (Shaw) right now. Jared picked off another one today and went the distance. He has a knack for breaking on the ball, watching the quarterbacks. He’s done a good job back there.

“Connor didn’t do much today,” continued the Head Ball Coach. “Connor was a little slow firing the ball. He held on to it too long several times so Dylan (Thompson) got most of the snaps. Dylan probably looked better than all of them today. (Connor) did ok but not exceptional. He needs to start being exceptional. Maybe that will come here in the next three months or so.” Shaw is expected to take 15-20 snaps on Saturday, while Dylan “will get a whole bunch,” according to Coach Spurrier. Thompson and senior walk-on Seth Strickland are competing for the backup spot behind Shaw.

The team will practice once more on Thursday before wrapping up spring drills with the annual Garnet & Black Spring Game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at Williams-Brice Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
