Gamecocks checking on safety transfer
March 19, 2015
Rising senior safety Isaiah Johnson, who is set to graduate from Kansas in May, recently announced his plans to transfer for his final season, and South Carolina is in the mix.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Johnson has received his release to speak with other schools and on Wednesday Johnson spoke to South Carolina special teams coordinator Joe Robinson.
"They said they were really excited about my film," Johnson said. "I talked to (Robinson) on Twitter for a while and then today I talked to him on the phone and he said they want to try to bring me there on a visit on one of these weekends coming up soon."
South Carolina, Louisville and Wake Forest have informed Johnson that they want him, Johnson says, though all three programs are in the process of gathering information and confirming that he'll be able to transfer as a graduate student.
If everything checks out, Johnson would arrive at the school of his choice this summer with one season of eligibility left and able to play right away in 2015.
What does Johnson think of South Carolina?
"First and foremost, it's obviously in the SEC, that's a big thing," Johnson said. "And just having Steve Spurrier as your head coach, that's big too. I know how big he is in the college coaching world. It's cool, because my little brother was being recruited during his high school career, so I used to go there on some unofficial visits with him. I know Columbia and know about the school."
Johnson, who is originally from Cary, N.C. arrived at Kansas in 2013 via Iowa Western C.C., and started all 24 games the past two seasons at strong safety for the Jayhawks. In 2013, he was named the Big 12's Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
Johnson totaled 148 tackles, six interceptions and seven pass breakups in two seasons.
Johnson is scheduled to graduate from Kansas on May 17.
"I really don't want to say a leader right now, only because everyone just came at me today," Johnson said. "I'm just going to weigh all these options out and make the best decision for me coming up. I want to get a feel for all the schools and what they have and who they have that I would be competing against and what my chances would be of playing right now. I want to be ready to compete for a starting job. I don't really have a date, but I'll probably decide pretty soon."
The Panther Creek High School grad days he's leaving Kansas for "personal reasons" according to reports.
