DE Keir Thomas (6-3 240) of Miami is a Florida State commitment but is also giving USC strong consideration. He attended the Gamecocks’ Showcase camp in June and ever since then the Gamecocks have been chipping away at the Seminoles’ advantage.
“Right now South Carolina is number one behind Florida State,” Thomas said. “I love South Carolina. Me and Coach Ward have a great relationship, a nice tight bond. It was nice up there, nice facilities. It was great.”
Thomas has been invited to the upcoming pool party on Friday but is not sure he can make it. He has also visited Alabama, Arkansas, Central Florida, Florida State and Auburn and he might visit Oklahoma before practice begins.
Thomas knows the USC defense struggled last season but he’s also aware of how strong the Gamecocks were on defense in previous seasons, and that’s part of the attraction for him.
“Their defense is phenomenal,” Thomas said. “I have to go to a team that’s known for good defense and South Carolina is known for having good defenses.”
Thomas plans to take official visits to USC, Florida State, Arkansas and Auburn this fall and he wants to take those visits before finalizing a decision. He said his commitment to Florida State is “still kind of solid” but there are things USC can do to get closer to him.
“Just communicate with me every day and let me know that they want me bad and make me feel comfortable when I go to South Carolina so I will feel home again.”
Thomas certainly feels at home in the offensive backfield. Last season he had 20 sacks along with 76 tackles and 6 forced fumbles.
