Gamecocks coaches give reasons for thanks

Nov.24, 2016

Thankful for on Thanksgiving

While sitting down at the table for Thanksgiving, South Carolina fans might want to offer thanks for defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson.

Since arriving to Columbia with Muschamp almost 12 months ago, Robinson has played significant part in landing some of South Carolina’s top-rated recruits.

According to his 247Sports commitment list, Robinson has served as the lead-recruiter for 4-star cornerback Jamyest Williams and 3-star running back Kyshaun Bryan, both of whom are committed to the Gamecocks 2017 class.

For the 2016 haul, Robinson played a significant role in landing cornerback JaMarcus King, along with freshmen defensive linemen Keir Thomas and Kobe Smith.

Running backs coach Bobby Bentley has also done solid work on the recruiting trail since coming on board. Four-star safety Hamsah Nasirildeen and 4-star wide receiver Shi Smith are two of Bentley’s area recruits who are committed to the Gamecocks for 2017.

Bentley also fathered the team’s starting quarterback, so he has that working for him, too.

Despite what offensive line play critics may believe, Shawn Elliott has been a stud on the recruiting trail. Juxtaposed with the effort the previous head coach put into recruiting, Elliott’s work is that much more impressive.

Elliott served as the primary recruiter for South Carolina’s leading rusher (Rico Dowdle), top receiver (Deebo Samuel) and best offensive lineman (Zack Bailey).

More visits for Nixon

JUCO cornerback target Keisean Nixon has scheduled official visit plans for this upcoming weekend. The 3-star from Arizona Western College announced the news on Twitter on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, he took an unofficial visit to UCLA and added an offer from his hometown school.

Nixon has already taken official visits to Colorado State and Iowa State. He, of course, took an official visit to South Carolina this past weekend.

“It was a big visit. I got to see a lot. It was a productive visit,” Nixon told SEC Country on Sunday night.
