The South Carolina Gamecocks will be amply represented in the 2021 FIBA Americup Tournament, playing this weekend in Puerto Rico. Three national teams will have current and future Gamecocks on their rosters, in fact:

Current players Aliyah Boston and Destanni Henderson are both on the United States team:

Current player Laeticia Amihere is on the Canada Senior team:

And incoming transfer Kamilla Cardoso - who's full name is Kamilla Soares Cardoso SIlva and is listed as Kamilla Silva by her team, is on the Brazil team:

Kamilla (Cardoso) Silva and Brazil led off the tournament with a game versus El Salvador Friday. They won handily 118-43. Kamilla had 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting, with 12 rebounds and 3 blocks in 18:00 minutes of playing time. Today, they played their 2nd game this time against Colombia - Colombia made it closer for one half leading 28-27 at the halftime break, but Brazil out-scored Colombia 52-28 in the 2nd half to win 79-56. Kamilla scored 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting in just 14 minutes of playing time, and added 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Amihere's Canada team played today against the US Virgin Islands, and won 101-41. Amihere played 15:44 minutes off the bench and scored 10 points on 2 for 4 shooting, plus 6 for 7 at the free throw line, and added 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Also of note, former Gamecock transfer Shay Colley, the lone member of the 2015 recruiting class and then transferred after he freshman season to be closer to home - initially to Pittsburgh but ultimately to Michigan State. She played 15:41 minutes off the bench and scored 9 pts with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

The United States team will play its first game of the tournament today starting at 6:00 pm ET against the Dominican Republic.....

United States win 102-39. The game was dominated with major games from the posts for USA: Aliyah Boston started it off with 10 pts on 4-7 shooting, with 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and a 1steal. Elissa Cunane then stepped in and scored 12 pts on 5-8 shooting, with 8 boards, and tie for team lead 4 steals. Sedona Prince then showed what she could do with 12 pts on 5-6 shooting, with 4 rebounds and 1 block.

But then as all the trees were plundering and pillaging, the smallest player on the team - PG Destanni Henderson - said "hold my (non-alcoholic) beer", and scores 17 points on 5-8 shooting, including 5-6 from the 3-pt line. She also added a team-leading 5 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block....

The starting 5 for the States only scored 37 points for the game, with Boston the only starter in double figures. Prolific scorers and starters Rhyne Howard (4 pts on 1-8 shooting) and Diamond Miller (8 pts on 2-8 shooting) struggled to get their games going.

But the reserves stormed the floor offensively, with Henderson, Cunane, and Prince all leading the way. With the all-reserve unit on the floor for the 4th quarter, the United States scored the most points (35) of any period, 10 pts more than the 1st qtr output.........

Canada defeated Brazil in a tight contest 71-67. Laeticia Amihere played 12:49 minutes off the bench and scored 11 points on 5-8 shooting. She added 1 rebound, and 1 assist. Kamilla Cardoso Silva played only 6:56 minutes for Brazil - also from the bench - and was scoreless off of only 2 missed shot attempts. She had 2 rebounds for a quiet effort on her part.

In the later game, USA defeated tournament host team Puerto Rico 87-65. Aliyah Boston led the way in efficiency again for the 2nd game with 15 points on 6-11 shooting, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks and 1 steal in 20:32 minutes as a starter. Destanni Henderson came off the bench to score 3 points on 1-5 shooting, with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. The one shot attempt made was a 3-pointer, so she's the team leader in the tournament with 6 made 3-ptrs....

In today's noon game, Canada defeated El Salvador 98-41. Amihere was 2nd on the Canadian team in efficiency off the bench for 15:28 minutes with 8 points on 3-3 shooting, with 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Amihere has shot 10-15 (.667) from the field in 3 games thus far, and averaged 9.7 ppg and 6.0 rpg, despite the one game with only 1 board.

In the game that followed, Brazil defeated the US Virgin Islands 77-56. Cardoso Silva stormed back from her quiet 2nd game of the tournament to lead Brazil easily in efficiency points and points scored with 17 on 6-9 shooting. She added 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Cardoso Silva is averaging 11.0 ppg for 3 games thus far despite scoring all of those points in just 2 of the games, and has shot a combined 12-19 (.632) shooting from the field. She's also averaged 8.3 rpg and 1.7 bpg.....

One note of interest regarding the US Virgin Islands is that Aliyah Boston's older sister Alexis Boston is on their team roster. She was a student  at South Carolina and a student manager during her sister Aliyah's first 2 seasons, but chose to transfer to find a playing opportunity elsewhere. She's played few minutes for the USVI - about 1-2 minutes each game.

USA is about to start it's game against Venezuela in a few minutes.

The United States defeated Venezuela 102-53 Monday night to improve to 3-0 in their Group B of the 2021 Americup competition. Once again the big girls of the US team led the way against the smaller Group B competition. Starter and South Carolina Gamecock Aliyah Boston led the team in efficiency again with 15 points scored on 6-6 shooting in 15:58 minutes of play. Boston added 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 assists. Reserve Sedona Prince exploded in the final period to lead the team in scoring with 19 points on 8-14 shooting in 22:18 minutes, and added 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Reserve Elissa Cunane scored 11 pts on 5-12 shooting in 22:10 minutes, and led the team with 9 rebounds and added 2 steals. Starting Forward Rhyne Howard did her work from the outside scoring 17 pts in 21:49 shooting 6-12 including 5-9 from behind the 3-pt. arc. Howard added 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Gamecock reserve PG Destanni Henderson scored 3 points on 1-4 all shooting from the 3-pt. arc in 13:50, and added 5 assists and 1 steal.

The United States final Group B game with Argentina has been cancelled due to Argentina forfeiting due to covd-19 testing protocols. So that concludes the "Group Phase" portion of the tournament. The Bracket Phase will now begin for both Groups beginning Thursday and through the weekend.

The game with the United States was the 2nd straight cancellation for Argentina due to positive testing for covid-19 within it's group of players, coaches, and help staff. Their Sunday night game versus Venezuela was also cancelled. Per FIBA rules, two forfeitures in a tournament means default by that team from the tournament, leaving the Group B with only 4 remaining teams (United States, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic). The Group A still has 5 teams.

So this does not hurt the USA's standing in Group B, as they were the only undefeated team in the group, and they will go on as the #1 Seed of their group. With the start of Bracket Phase, teams from both Groups will finally play each other. The setup has the #1 Seed of each Group play the #4 Seed of the other Group, and the #2 Seed of each Group playing the #3 Seed of the other Group. The 5th-place team in the Group Phase standings does not advance to the Bracket Phase, so El Salvadore who went 0-4 in Group A is out. Now Argentina who was the #3 Seed in Group B is out, and former #4 Seed Dominican Republic (0-3) gets to play in their place in the Bracket Phase.

The United States is set to play #4 Seed US Virgin Islands in the opening game of the Bracket Phase Thursday at 12:10 PM......

So we'll have a Boston vs. Boston scenario?  Hopefully, they both look at it like a fun challenge and don't stress out over it.

So we'll have a Boston vs. Boston scenario?  Hopefully, they both look at it like a fun challenge and don't stress out over it.

We had a slight Boston vs. Boston scenario in the game - Alexis played slightly over 4 minutes, took one shot attempt and was blocked by "big" little sis Aliyah. The United States won 97-46. Aliyah scored 12 pts on 4-5 shooting with 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. Destanni Henderson scored 7 pts and led the team with 8 rebounds.

In the other Quarterfinals, Canada defeated the Dominican Republic 90-53. The score looks good, but the Canadian team shot poorly overall, save for two players: Aislinn Konig who scored 23 pts on 8-10 shooting, and Laeticia Amihere who scored 17 pts on 7-12 shooting, and added 11 rebounds and 3 steals. The rest of the team shot 20-60 after those two.

Also, Brazil defeated Venezeula 90-59. Kamilla Cardoso Silva scored 12 pts on 4-8 shooting, with 9 rebounds.

USA next plays Brazil Friday at 6:10 pm, and Canada faces Puerto Rico at 9:10 pm....

In what should'nt have been too surprising to end up as a defensive slugfest, the United States beats Brazil 71-60 to advance to the 2021 Americup Championship game. The US was led by Elissa Cunane's 19 points on 7-9 shooting, and 8 rebounds. 15 of those points came in the 4th quarter alone. Nazahrah Hillmon-Baker and Rhyne Howard added 12 points each.

Both teams struggled to hit shots as the size and height in the paint made easy shots hard to come by. Aliyah Boston easily had her poorest performance of the tournament, scoring 6 points on 3-14 shooting, and added 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Destanni Henderson - getting her first start of the tournament for the United States - also played poorly, scoring 3 pts on 1-3 shooting, with 0 assists and 4 turnovers in 13:30 minutes of play. But clearly Brazil was a step up in class of opponent from the other teams in the USA's Group Phase.

Canada falls to Puerto Rico 65-61 in a tightly contested battle. Laeticia Amihere had 12 pts on 5-9 shooting and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough.

So the 3rd-place game between the top 2 teams in Group A - Canada and Brazil - will take place Saturday at 6:10 pm, and the championship game between the top 2 teams in Group B - USA and Puerto Rico - will tip off afterwards at 9:10 pm.....

The 3rd-place game between Canada and Brazil promised to be an exciting one, as both teams were from the same group, and thus had already played earlier in the tournament, with Canada winning a very tight 71-67 game. They proved expectations, and then some.

This time it was Brazil who defeated Canada 87-82 in double overtime. Laeticia Amihere played heroically for Canada, with 22 points on 9-22 shooting, with 11 rebounds and 2 steals. Brazil's Kamilla Cardoso Silva scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting, with 4 rebounds and 1 block.

In the championship game, The United States pulled away from Puerto Rico to win 74-59 to win the 2021 Americup Tournament. Aliyah Boston rebounded from her poor game in the semifinals to score 17 points on 6-11 shooting, with 19 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Destanni Henderson however had a quiet game with only 1 assist.

That's it for the upperclassmen Gamecocks. There's still the U19 tournament that Sania Feagin will participate in.....
