Gamecocks continue to host bevy of 4-star prospects

Greensboro WR Mike Wyman enjoys visit
Since spring practice cranked up at South Carolina, several prospects from the 2019 and 2020 classes have made their way to Columbia to get an up-close look at the 2018 Gamecocks.
Among the top-rated sophomores to visit South Carolina is 4-star wide receiver Mike Wyman, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound prospect from Dudley High School in Greensboro, N.C.
“My visit was great. Watching the wideouts practice is what stood out to me the most,” he said. “The strength trainer did some demonstrations on fitness by positions.”
Wyman spent a good portion of the day getting to know offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon, whom he described as a “great personality.”
“[We] talked about education mostly, and a little about football,” Wyman said.
247Sports lists Wyman as the No. 21 wide receiver in the Class of 2020.
QB target from up north
Most of the 2019 quarterbacks with offers from South Carolina have been by the school this spring, including 4-star Taisun Phommachanh, who’s from Bridgeport, Conn.
The 6-4, 205-pound dual threat shared details of his visit in a recent interview with Rivals.
“We talked about football, off-the-field stuff, and everything about South Carolina,” Phommachanh said. “They said they are going to be throwing the ball a lot so we also watched a lot of film. I think I could do pretty well in that offense. It was definitely one of the better visits. The coaches showed me and my family a good time.”
The No. 108 overall prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports composite, will release a list of favorites following visits next week to Florida and Florida State.
The other half from Elizabeth City, N.C.
Four-star linebacker Traveon Freshwater, who profiles as an outside linebacker/defensive end at South Carolina, was joined on campus earlier this month by his teammate from Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City, N.C., 4-star athlete J.R. Walker.
Walker (6-1, 205) would play in the Gamecocks defensive backfield. However, they’ve got some work to do if they’re going to land him.
According to Phil Kornblut of SportsTalkSC, Walker favors North Carolina State. But Walker did enjoy his time in Columbia, particularly with defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson.
“Right now he’s saying I can play safety or nickel. He likes my size and my length that I have, said that’s something very special and most people don’t have,” Walker said. “Muschamp said he wants me here and he loves me as a player and a person. He wants me to accomplish what I want to do at South Carolina.”
Walker is the No. 11 2019 prospect in North Carolina. Freshwater is No. 13.
