Gamecocks could be in Justin Williams’ future

When future USC quarterback Dakereon Joyner was passing for all those yards at Fort Dorchester, one of his favorite targets was Shrine Bowl WR Justin Williams. Joyner has already enrolled at USC and it’s possible Williams could join him down the road.
The only thing holding Williams back from being a major college recruit, according to his coach Steve LaPrad, is his grades. But the plan is for Williams to go and get those improved so that he can play at the top level, with USC and Virginia Tech the two major programs involved.
LaPrad said Williams first has to decide on his next course of action, going to a junior college, a prep school or getting his GED in March.
“He’s just got to make a decision over the next day or so what he’s going to try and do,” LaPrad said. “He’s going to be a junior college or a prep guy. There’s nothing else he can do.”
LaPrad said depending on what Williams decides to do, the hope is that he can go to a JC or prep school, get his grades in order and only lose one year of eligibility. And he said if all works out, Williams’ preference would be to eventually go to USC.
“That’s where he wants to go,” he said. “He just knows all them. He’s been wanting to go to South Carolina the whole time. Everybody was interested, his grades just weren’t good enough. Clemson was in the other day and said he probably was the best athlete in South Carolina.”
LaPrad said USC recruiter Pat Washington remains in regular contact and the Gamecocks definitely want Williams once he’s able to enroll. Last season Williams caught 47 passes for 866 yards and 14 touchdowns.
As for his signees on Wednesday, LaPrad said he will have OL Avery Snipes sign with SC State, WR Raquan Simmons with Wingate and OL Wakeel Rivers with Limestone.
