Gamecocks Down No. 22 Lady Vols 69-48

Feb. 02, 2020

Zia Cooke scored 20 points Sunday, and No. 1 South Carolina used its relentless defense to put away No. 22 Tennessee 69-48 for its 15th straight win. (VIEW ARTICLE)

Laeticia Amihere will be participating with her Canadian senior women's National Team as they participate in the 2020 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Ostend, Belgium. The tournament will take place from Thursday February 6th, through Sunday February 9th.

The Gamecocks are scheduled to travel to Arkansas and play them Thurs. the 6th. Arkansas is a decent rebounding team, but not what one may call a dominating one. They are more of a perimeter offense, 3-pt shooting team. In our previous game against the Hogs in Colonial Life Arena, Gamecock fans may remember that was the game that Boston pulled down 25 rebounds all by herself. The Gamecocks out-rebounded Arkansas in that game 63-33. So we may be OK without Amihere or even Boston against Arkansas as their top 3 players who carry their team in Dungee, Tolefree, and Ramirez are perimeter players. The impetus on beating Arky will fall on our guards.

But then comes the home game against Connecticut on Monday the 10th. Will Amihere be able to return from her national team's tournament that ends the day before on Sunday quick enough, and have energy to go against CT? She won't be able to practice at all with her college team this coming week, I don't suppose, or into the weekend to prepare for the Huskies. This scheduling kinda puts us into a bit of a bind personnel wise, I think. Connecticut is not as intimidating a post presence team as Tennessee is, but they are well-coached and prepared, and will have the officiating on their side 100% even though the game will be in Columbia. We will need to bring our guns as fully loaded as possible, to have a chance to pull off the win....
