Gamecocks evaluating Maryland corner

CB Dante Lovett (6-1 185) of Hyattsville, MD made his first venture in SEC territory last weekend with a visit to USC. Lovett is a swift corner who also runs track for the Stags. He’s looking to have a good summer to attract more recruiting attention. USC secondary coach Torian Gray has him on his watch list as a scholarship candidate at this point. For Lovett, that first trip to an SEC program was an eye opener.
“The first thing that stood out to me was seeing the stadium,” Lovett said. “I’d never seen a SEC stadium in person, and how big the stadium looks. And getting on campus, everything looked nice. And seeing snow in South Carolina, which I didn’t know would happen. When I got to the facilities, everything about it felt like a family. Everything seemed new. Everything about it was really nice.”
Lovett got the chance to spend some time with Gray and talk up some cornerback strategy. He came away from that session a smarter player.
“I
love the way he teaches the DBs the way they play,” Lovett said.
“The things that he was teaching was stuff I like to do. Their
corners, they teach them to come up and hit, and that’s something I like
doing, coming up and hitting and setting the edge. I like how their
defense is. They had the number one pass defense in the SEC.”
Lovett also met up with head coach Shane Beamer. The Gamecocks are not ready to offer him yet, but he there could be some towards him down the road.
“They are really interested, and they are going to be in contact,” Lovett said. “They like me as a versatile DB. I can play either corner or safety. My main position is corner.”
Lovett had two interceptions last season, in the same game, and he said after that quarterbacks stayed away from him.
Lovett also visited Clemson while he was in South Carolina, but that was more on him than it was Clemson. He did meet Tahj Boyd on the visit. He has also seen West Virginia this month.
Lovett has offers from USF, Akron, Kent State, Arkansas State and Toledo.
