USC head coach Frank Martin and assistant coach Chuck Martin have identified 6-7 Matt Cross of Beverly, MA as a target for the 2020 class.  Cross plays for Woodstock Academy in Connecticut and averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds per game this season.  He said the Gamecock coaches came up to see him a few weeks ago and that jump-started what’s becoming a strong relationship.

“I met Frank and Chucky Martin down at my school. They were coming down to watch us play a little pickup and that’s when I first met them,” Cross said. “They talked to me afterwards and said they were interested and it went from there. I’ve developed a relationship with Frank and Chucky, and they wanted to get me down there for an unofficial visit. I went down there when they played Georgia. I sat right behind the bench and everyone was like telling me how Frank would be screaming and this and that, but I love that. I knew from there it would be a good fit. A couple of weeks later, Frank came up to my house and offered me a scholarship and wanted to check out and meet the family. That’s how we developed our relationship.”

Not only did Cross enjoy Martin scream and stomp during that Georgia game, he also admired his coaching style.

“He’s an old school guy and that’s what I like in him because that’s how the people are I’m around, my coach and my dad,” Cross said. “I thought it was a great fit. I thought he would fit the way I like it and I thought I would fit the way he likes it. I thought he was an honest dude. I’m an old school type of player and I think he likes my toughness and the old school type of game that I think he saw in me.”

Cross also holds offers from Penn State, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Tulane and St. Joseph’s.  He doesn’t want to rush his decision but it definitely appears the Gamecocks will be a factor with him moving forward.

“I feel very good about them (Gamecocks). I think I fit their style and I think the way they are they fit my style, so I think it’s a very good fit so far,” Cross said.  “I wouldn’t say I’m close yet because the biggest time of my high school career in terms of recruiting will be this spring and summer.  So after this spring and summer, I’d say early high school season, I’ll be making my decision.”

Cross said he is being recruited for the small forward position.
