Gamecocks flip the page to 2018

Feb. 02, 2017

Looking ahead to 2018

If you’ve been following along with SEC Country, chances are you have a pretty fair sense at some of the top names we’ve been writing about for South Carolina in 2018.

The list starts with guys such as 5-star defensive end Xavier Thomas (Florence, S.C.), 4-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner (North Charleston, S.C.), 4-star linebacker Dax Hollifield and 4-star defensive end Stephon Wynn Jr.

Around here, those guys have been written about ad nauseam.

There a few others you may recognize that you’ll want to get to know better over the next several months:

4-star RB
Master Teague III
Murfreesboro,Tenn.

4-star DT
Rick Sandidge
Concord, N.C.

3-star DT
Kelijiha Brown
Saluda, N.C.

3-star WR
Demarcus Gregory
Duncan, S.C.

4-star OT
Dylan Wonnum
Tucker, Ga.

4-star OT
Maxwell Iyama
Murfreesboro, Tenn.

3-star OG
Warren Ericson
Duluth, Ga.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

South Carolina has passed out offers to several prospects from the 2018 class. According to 247Sports, the Gamecocks have offered more than 60 offensive prospects for the 2018 cycle. Eighty more classified as defensive players and athletes have also reported offers.
Below are a few of the personal favorites that you may not have read a whole heck of a lot about in this space:

LB Zakoby McClain (Valdosta, Ga.)
The 4-star linebacker jumped out during practice sessions before the Georgia Junior Bowl. Listed as a 6-foot, 205-pound prospect, McClain still has some growing to do before he’s ready to play linebacker in the SEC, but he’s got the frame to support the weight. McClain is a nice athlete who hits like a truck.

TE Gavin Schoenwald (Brentwood, Tenn.)
Six prospects classified as tight ends have received offers from South Carolina. Schoenwald, a converted quarterback, is listed as a 4-star athlete. But after watching his junior film, it’s rather apparent that his future is at tight end. He’s got the size (6-5, 225) and has already displayed an ability to attach to the line and block.

TE Katerian Legrone (Atlanta, Ga.)
South Carolina gave Legrone (6-3, 215) his first offer while he was on campus. Plenty more will follow. The unranked prospect is a fluid receiver and athlete who runs good routes. His highlights at safety are also impressive. A future at outside linebacker could also be in the cards.

Both Legrone and Schoenwald were on campus last month.

DT D’Andre Litaker (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
This is the third guy from Murfreesboro who’s appeared in this writing. South Carolina running backs coach Bobby Bentley recruits the area and he’s already made some in-roads for the Gamecocks. Litaker, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound prospect is one of 11 4-star talents from the state of Tennessee’s 2018 cycle and the top overall defensive tackle. He’s a big, nimble athlete with offers from just about everyone in the SEC.

National Signing Day offers
The South Carolina coaches sent out a handful of offers to 2018 prospects on Wednesday, including 4-star wide receiver Seth Williams, who’s from Paul Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Defensive tackle Nesta Silvera, a 3-star from Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla., added one to his lengthy list. So did 4-star defensive tackle Trevor Trout (St. Louis, Mo.) and 4-star safety Kwantel Raines (Aliquippa, Pa.).
