Gamecocks gain ground for Marlon Character

South Carolina continues to gain momentum with former Gamecocks commit Marlon Character after his official visit to USC this weekend.
Character remains committed to Auburn but said USC is moving up his list, thanks in large part to Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, who were both recruiting Character when they were at Auburn.
“I loved the visit. The visit was really good. I got a lot out of it,” he said. “South Carolina is a little higher with the new coaching staff than it was when everybody was about to leave and stuff like that. The coaches that were recruiting me from Auburn, they’re there now.”
Character, who played at Grady High in Atlanta, will continue to consider the Gamecocks, Auburn and Virginia Tech and will make a final decision on signing day, he said.
“I’m still committed right now to Auburn, but I’m still taking into consideration other schools like South Carolina and Virginia Tech because those are the officials that I’m taking,” he said.
Character said USC’s coaching staff told him he would have a good opportunity to come in and earn immediate playing time if he chooses to come to Columbia, and he likes the plan Muschamp and Robinson have in place for him.
“I love every way they talk about using me. ... They said they’re going to use me multiple ways on the defense,” Character explained. “They have a lot of spots open right now. They said they just need corners, safeties, nickels, anything to get active on the field early and make some plays.”
Character said he has a great relationship with Muschamp and Robinson that goes deeper than football.
“I just like the energy that they bring and the passion that they have and the want for me to be there,” he said. “That’s a big part of the recruitment, just building relationships with the coaches and being able to talk to them about anything other than football, just personal relationships.”
Character’s trip to USC included watching the Gamecocks beat Missouri in basketball Saturday afternoon. He also got an in-depth look at the campus.
“I had never been to a college basketball game, so that was a great experience for me. I got a lot of attention from the fans. That was fun,” he said. “I like the campus. It’s a little different than the other campuses I’ve been to with the separation, but the dorms are nice, the city is nice, the people, I like the campus.”
