Gamecocks, Gators aim toward No. 1 vs. No. 2 baseball clash next week
A few good things have to happen in Lexington and Gainesville this weekend, but there is potential for the college baseball version of football’s Alabama vs. LSU next week: Florida vs. South Carolina in Columbia in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown.
Presently, Florida (16-1) is No. 1 in the Baseball America Top 25 poll. The Gamecocks (15-1) are No. 3 with Stanford (13-2) No. 2.
Before a new Baseball America poll comes out on Monday, here is what the three teams have in store:
Florida: Three home games against SEC East rival Vanderbilt.
Stanford: Idle (finals week).
South Carolina: Three games at Kentucky, starting tonight at 7 p.m.
Gamecocks head coach Ray Tanner is not looking past the Wildcats, a surprising 18-0 but unranked.
“Kentucky has always been a difficult opponent,” Tanner said, “especially at home. Our work is cut out for us.”
