Gamecocks getting closer with three-star linebacker

Three-star LB Kolbe Fields (6-1 205) of New Orleans remains committed to Memphis though he opted not to sign this month. A one-time Oklahoma State commitment, Fields decided to delay signing until September to see what other options may come his well. The one school to step in recently is USC. The Gamecocks have not yet offered but that could soon change.
“They’ve been keeping in contact with me and I talked to them recently, and so we’ve been talking, that’s all that’s been going on with them,” Fields said. “I’ve talked to coach Drew Hughes and coach Mike Peterson. I’m supposed to get on the phone with them (Wednesday) to really see what’s going on. He (Hughes) was just telling me the facts about the school and that they have 12 spots to offer and how they have space for linebackers. I’m just waiting on the to watch my tape and hopefully they’ll make that move.”
Fields said he’s not yet talked to new coach Shane Beamer but he hopes to soon. He is planning to talk with Peterson more on Wednesday to learn about the program from what he’s been able to piece together on his own.
“I don’t know too much about them, but I’ve been going on their Twitter page and looking at the environment,” Fields said. “It looks like a very fun environment. The fans love it there. That’s what I’m getting from the videos that I’ve seen so far.”
USC is the only other school Fields is communicating with other than Memphis at this point. He would love to come away from his Wednesday conversation with an offer, but he’s keeping his expectations in check.
“I don’t want to say too much,” he said. “It would open it up and I would have another option. I don’t want to say too much.”
Fields had an excellent senior season with 105 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. He was named the Defensive MVP of his district and expects to be named All-State.
