Gamecocks give Short something to think about

WR Zavier Short (6-1 181) of Chapin met with USC coach Shane Beamer at the school Wednesday morning and before the meeting was over, Short had an offer from the Gamecocks. Short, who has been committed to Appalachian State, did not immediately renounce his commitment and jump on board with the Gamecocks, but he now has something to consider before signing on December 15th.
“Coach Beamer came by the school today and we just talked, and he was saying great things and he ended up offering. It was a good morning,” Short said. “It means a lot. I used to live in West Virginia and Marshall was the hometown team. Ever since I moved here, I’ve been a Carolina fan. Ever since I sold myself on playing at the next level, I’ve been working towards it. To get an offer like this means a lot.”
Short was able to display his skills in front of Beamer and receivers coach Justin Stepp in camp last June. His skills are vast because he is fast, something Beamer understood from watching him in camp.
“He first asked me what I think I could do at the next level and what I plan on playing,” Short said. “I told him slot receiver and he agreed with me. He said they want to try to use me like Swiss army knife, just do what I can do and whatever can help the team.”
Appalachian, however, is not going to give up without a fight. Mountaineers receivers coach Pat Washington is a former Gamecock tight ends coach under Will Muschamp and is recruiting Short. The two talk every day and Washington is scheduled for an in-home visit with him Monday night.
“I’m going to talk to my family tonight. They are real happy for me too,” Short said. “As of right now, I’m still committed to App. I’m just going to think over things and just see what the best option is for me. I’m still committed to App. That’s the plan right now. I’ve just got to sit down and talk and pray about it.”
Short said Beamer has invited him to visit this weekend, either for an official visit or just a day trip. He’s not yet decided on that.
This season Short caught 67 passes for 1038 yards and 14 touchdowns. For his career he had 217 receptions for 3391 yards.
