Gamecocks have a plan for its two remaining scholarships

February 07, 2018

South Carolina’s football team has two scholarships left to give, and the Gamecocks know which players they want to fill those spots, head coach Will Muschamp said Wednesday.

Those spots won’t be filled on National Signing Day, though.

Muschamp wrapped up where the Gamecocks’ 2018 class stands now on Wednesday afternoon. The class grew by two Wednesday when offensive lineman Dylan Wonnum and defensive lineman Rick Sandidge signed with the Gamecocks.

With 22 total signees and transfer running back Ty’Son Williams’ scholarship counting toward this class, that leaves two spots that can be filled.

Former Dutch Fork star Bryce Thompson, who is verbally committed to South Carolina, did not sign. Coaches are not allowed to talk about unsigned players. Thompson has tweeted that he remains committed to the Gamecocks.

“Right now, unless they have completed high school none of them are academically eligible,” Muschamp said. “Some guys are a little further away than others. As the head coach you have to project and say, ‘Is this young man going to be eligible at South Carolina at the end of the day?’ ”
Kent State kicker and grad transfer Shane Hynes committed to USC in December and could be a candidate to receive a scholarship.

Hynes plans to enroll this summer. He has not signed a letter of intent and the Gamecocks have not confirmed him yet as being part of the team.

Hope the plan works well
