Gamecocks holding firm in Marlon Character’s top group
July 21, 2015
HIGHLIGHTS
Atlanta prospect’s top three are USC, Auburn, Virginia Tech
Commitment could come after he makes a visit or two
Was a Georgia fan but Bulldogs no longer college option
Marlon Character has been busy with football this summer: training, school workouts and 7-on-7 events.
While there hasn’t been as much time for recruiting-specific activities, the 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back from Grady High in Atlanta still has more visits to take before he’s ready to make a commitment, he said.
Specifically, the four-star prospect wants to see South Carolina and Virginia Tech and hopes to get to both before the summer is up. The Gamecocks and Hokies are in his top three with Auburn. He was able to visit the Tigers earlier this summer and enjoyed that trip.
Transportation and timing are the biggest things holding him back from hitting the road for recruiting purposes, he said. He didn’t declare a leader but said USC and Auburn are neck-and-neck as far as communication goes.
He has a USC connection in freshman defensive back Antoine Wilder, whom Character knows from the Atlanta-area I Dare U training group. And Steve Spurrier visited last winter along with recruiter Lorenzo Ward.
Here are five more things to know about Character’s recruitment.
1. The Auburn visit went well
“That was a great visit for me. I worked out for the coaches down there and they liked me a lot. I saw the campus, went to the locker room. I liked them. I moved them up to my top three.”
2. Georgia is no longer an option
“They’ve fallen out. They’re not really recruiting me. I talked to a coach who asked me if I was coming to Dawg Night and I said, ‘No, that’s not really an option of mine anymore just because of communication and other things.’ ”
3. He visited USC last for the Georgia game in 2014 (his dad openly cheered for UGA)
“The one thing I liked about the game was that the fans had energy the whole game. It was a great feeling. At the time I was actually going for Georgia at the beginning of the game because I was such a Georgia fan. I wasn’t really cheering for them. I was keeping it to myself, just watching.”
4. He is itching to make a commitment, but ...
“It’s on my mind. It’s something I want to do. The thing that is holding me back from a commitment is getting to Virginia Tech and seeing what is really there. ... I don’t want to wait until my officials to make a commitment, not because I think it will be too late, just because I want to put something out there to the coaches to let them know I am interested in them and I want to go there.”
5. Recruiting feels more serious at this point
“It was fun in the beginning. Then it got real serious toward the end just for me, just thinking about it every day and every time I wake up. On social media you see is write-ups about yourself and see fans saying where they want you go. It’s a lot. I’m just taking it all in and staying humble about it.”
