Gamecocks hope to upgrade running back talent with son of former NFL star

With new running backs coach Thomas Brown in charge, South Carolina is trying to upgrade its talent at the running back position in a big way. The Gamecocks haven’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since the days of Mike Davis. Nearby they have focused on Tank Bigsby of Hoganville, Georgia who was in for another visit this past weekend. But Brown is swinging for the fences and he has his eyes on another of the nation’s top prospects in Sam Adams II of Sammamish, Washington.
Brown offered Adams earlier this month following the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Washington, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Southern Cal, Florida State, Arizona State, Auburn, Florida, Michigan Oregon and many others. The offered generated some interest in the Gamecocks from Adams.
“It was cool to talk to coach Brown,” Adams said. “I like his style of coaching. South Carolina plays in the SEC and week in and week out you have to be ready to roll. No weeks off. I would love to play in a conference like that for a coach like coach Brown. I do not have a history with them but I look to build a relationship with the staff and learn more about the school and the area.”
In February, Adams took a recruiting swing through the Southeast but did not stop by South Carolina. He did visit Clemson, Alabama and Georgia. He was in Tampa Saturday with his 7-on-7 team and he spoke highly of nearby Washington in an interview with 247Sports. He also said he would be visiting Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech during his upcoming spring visit.
According to Max Preps, last season Adams rushed for 929 yards, averaging 9.9 yards per carry, and scored 17 touchdowns.
Football runs in his family. His grandfather and father played in the NFL and his brother is a cornerback at Arizona State.
