An O-lineman from North Carolina to know
South Carolina is among the regional schools to receive an early look at 2020 offensive lineman Seth Williams, a 6-foot-4, 272-pound prospect from Statesville (N.C.) High School.
Williams was on campus in the summer for the Gamecocks’ lineman camp, then recently returned for the Arkansas game.
“It was good. I liked the atmosphere and they have really nice facilities and a stadium and everything. I liked the fans, too. They filled the whole place up,” he said. “It was loud and I really enjoyed it.”
Offensive line coach Eric Wolford has already made a good impression.
“He’s a real nice guy and everything,” Williams said. “You can really tell he knows what he’s talking about. I really like working with him. He’s cool.”
The program, he added, is “on the rise and all, the whole team.”
Along with the Gamecocks’ 26-point win against the Razorbacks, he’s also been to games this season at Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and North Carolina State. Up next is Appalachian State.
Williams, who plays center and left tackle for Statesville, was “kind of” a North Carolina fan growing up, but that’s “kind of fading away” now that he’s a prospect. A handful of factors will be kept in mind, but books are his priority when deciding where he wants to play at the next level.
“Obviously, school first,” he said. “I’m not really sure what I want to go in yet, but school first, then football, the facilities and everything.”
This season, Williams has 32 pancake blocks.
Visiting this weekend
Another top 2020 prospect from the state of North Carolina — the best one, according to the 247Sports rankings — will visit South Carolina on Saturday for the Florida game.
Jacolbe Cowan, a defensive end from Providence Day School in Charlotte, N.C., already has offers from some of the country’s premier programs: Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and Notre Dame.
South Carolina, of course, also is in that mix. The Gamecocks have hosted him on campus before, most recently during the summer for a 7-on-7 tournament with his teammates.
Cowan will return this weekend for the Florida game.
Overall, he’s ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the country. His teammate, wide receiver Porter Rooks, also is a top 10 2020 target. There’s no word yet if he’ll be in town, too.
Official visitors
Three of South Carolina’s 2018 targets are also set be in Williams-Brice Stadium for the Florida game:
