Gamecocks in good spot early on with 2023 Florida safety
SPORTSTALK / December 17, 2021
SAF Cameron Upshaw (6-1 165) of Perry, FL looks like a prime target for USC and others in the 2023 class. The Gamecocks offered early and secondary coach Torrian Gray has been by his school to check in on him. Perry said he and Gray are hitting it off well and he feels pretty strong about the Gamecocks at this point.
“I like what they are doing,” Upshaw said. “It’s a program that’s coming up, and I can see that. Spencer Rattler just went there. One of my friends from Godby (Kajuan Banks) just signed with South Carolina. Right now, they are at the top of my list.”
Upshaw said Maryland, Penn State and Virginia are others that are strong on him at this early stage of his recruiting. He said he’s also looking at FAMU and Jackson State.
As for Gray and the Gamecocks, Upshaw said he and the coach have developed a nice connection.
“I talk to him a lot. I text him and he will text me and we just chop it up with each other,” Upshaw said. “It’s not always about football. When he came to my school and checked up on me, he wasn’t just about football. He was making sure I was good at home. Personal things, making sure I was good. It wasn’t always about football. I like that. I like that about South Carolina. For him to do that, I feel like that’s how the whole coaching staff is, and I want to be coached by a coaching staff like that.”
Upshaw plays safety and quarterback for Gadsden County High and made 80 tackles this season with one interception. He said Gray likes how he gets people on the ground.
“He likes my length and my ability to tackle,” Upshaw said. “He knows I can cover. He likes my ability to tackle, too, open field tackling at that.”
Upshaw has visited FAMU and USF and he said he will visit USC for the first time in January for one of the Gamecocks’ recruiting days that month.
