5 star DE Reggie Grimes (6-4 240) of Mt. Juliet, TN is one of the premier prospects in the nation with a deep football heritage. His father starred at Alabama and later played for the Patriots. He has cut his list to a final six of USC, Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Grimes said there is not favorite from that group and he won’t be unduly influenced by his Alabama family ties. His mom also is a Bama grad.
The Gamecocks noticed Grimes early in the recruiting game and that’s one reason why he stuck with them over numerous other possibilities.
“They are recruiting me hard and were among my first two offers,” Grimes said. “I’ve been up there a few times. I love it up there. It’s a great place to be, a great game day environment.”
Talking with defensive minds Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson, Grimes said the Gamecocks have a good plan for him should he decide to join them.
“They said that I’m long, athletic, quick, fast and physical,” Grimes said. “Good people, really impressed with them and how they run their defense. They said they would have me in an outside linebacker/ defensive end hybrid position. Coming off the edge, dropping in coverage, bullying tight ends and tackles and stuff like that.”
Clemson also was in the mix with Grimes and he was highly interested in the Tigers. But shortly before he released his final six, he got a call from the Tigers.
“They called and told me they had already filled up their defensive end/outside linebacker positions, that’s what kind of prompted me to release my top six,” Grimes said. “It did, it did (bother me). That was a school I was looking at heavily. But it is what it is, just keep on rolling.”
Grimes visited USC in late January for a junior day. He said USC definitely will get one of his official visits and that likely will be his next visit with the Gamecocks. He visited Vanderbilt two weeks ago and will visit Alabama this weekend. He said will not sign early and probably won’t have a decision until January at the latest.
