Gamecocks in the NFL Week 16: Deebo Samuel, Johnathan Joseph set franchise records; Cook scores two TDs

With two first-half catches in San Francisco’s Week 16 win over the Rams, Deebo Samuel passed Jerry Rice on the 49ers’ single-season rookie receiving list. Samuel’s 50th catch this season eclipsed Rice’s rookie season total of 49 in 1985.

Samuel, who has more catches than any other San Francisco wide receiver this season, passed former All-Pro Gene Washington (51 catches in 1969) for the most single-season catches by a 49ers’ rookie receiver. With 700 yards receiving on the season, the former South Carolina star needs just 12 yards to pass Washington for second-most receiving yards for a rookie.

Samuel was one of three Gamecocks in the NFL to set a franchise or personal record this week.

With a second-quarter interception of Jameis Winston, Johnathan Joseph became the Houston Texans’ all-time leader in the category, and with two touchdown catches for New Orleans, Jared Cook brought his season total to a career-high eight touchdowns this season.

Also of note, Melvin Ingram tied his season-high with three quarterback hits, Hayden Hurst had his third-most playing time this season, and Keisean Nixon returned the first two kicks of his career for a total 51 yards and had one tackle on defense.

Here’s a rundown on how they did:

A.J. Cann (2011-14), Jacksonville Jaguars G: Cann started and played 100 percent of Jacksonville’s offensive snaps. It was only the fourth time he has played all of the Jags’ offensive snaps. The Jaguars ran for 115 yards.
