One day after wrapping up an official visit to USC, 3 star 6-9 Jalyn McCreary of Legacy Charter School in Greenville and Marietta, GA announced a commitment to the Gamecocks.  McCreary spent the weekend checking out the program up close and getting to know the coaches and players better.  He said he chose the Gamecocks over DePaul and Georgia State, there were several things that attracted him to the Gamecocks.

“The facilities, the environment,” McCreary said.  “They treat you like you’re one of their’s.  The players are real cool and I just felt like I should commit there and it would feel like home.  And it’s close to home.”

McCreary said the Gamecocks have been recruiting him for about two months and over that period he’s gotten to know Frank Martin and watch him coach up his team.  He likes Martin’s style.

“He’s very tough, and I know that, and he’s going to coach me even harder and make me better,” McCreary said.  “I’ll feed off the energy.  I feed off energy like that.”

McCreary averaged over 18 points and 6 rebounds per game last season.  He said Martin likes him as a three and a four, and he feels he can bring something to the team at either position.

“I’m a transition player and rebounder and just try to affect the game,” he said.  “Hopefully I can help them win games and make the tournament.”

McCreary becomes the fourth commitment for Martin’s 2019 class.  He takes the spot vacated by the transfer of 7-0 center Jason Cudd.  He will sign his letter-of-intent later this month.

What Gamecocks are getting in McCreary

McCreary is rated a high three-star prospect by 247Sports Composite, ranked the No. 142 overall player, the No. 24 power forward and the Palmetto State’s No. 3 prospect behind McDonalds All-American point guard and Tennessee signee Josiah James and four-star forward and Alabama signee Juwan Gary.

McCreary joins a recruiting class that includes in-state 6-2 point guard Trae Hannibal (Hartsville), 6-7 wing Trey Anderson (Santa Ana, Calif./Woodstock Academy) and 6-10 power forward Wildens Leveque (Brockton, Ma./Gould Academy). The three signees are expected to be on campus by early June. McCreary will have to wait to until April 17, the start of the basketball signing period, to sign his letter of intent. Carolina's 2019 class 247Sports Team Ranking went from No. 74 to No. 45 nationally and from No. 12 to No. 7 in SEC.

A solid high 3-star, he automatically becomes our highest-rated commitment to the 2019 class, for all that that is worth. He's the 143rd ranked prospect per 247Sports, and just a tad higher rated than Lawson was last year, who was the 147th ranked prospect in the 2018 cycle. It would be nice if he impacts the team next season like AJ impacted it this past season.

An athletic stretch-3 and 4, he will be a player that adds athleticism, rebounding, and defense, and therefore should be a good fit for Coach Martin's system. He also provides some size in the paint with the losses of Silva and Cudd: Cudd was a bigger presence, but McCreary is an addition of athleticism that evens it out.

Next year's team looks set with Minaya, Lawson, Bryant, Hannibal, and McCreary as a pretty solid starting unit (just a guess), with Kotsar, Haase, Frink, Moss, Bolden, Couisnard (if he is eligible), Leveque and Anderson in reserve....
