Gamecocks land coveted 2022 QB Tanner Bailey

USC coach Shane Beamer and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Marcus Satterfield Friday signed another key prospect for their 2022 class. A few days after the announcement by former Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler that he will transfer to USC next month, the Gamecocks twosome added 4 star QB Tanner Bailey (6-1 195) of Gordo, AL to their class. Bailey signed with the Gamecocks Friday and announced his plans with a tweet from Disney World Saturday night.

Bailey said a few minutes after his announcement that Beamer and Satterfield made all the difference in his decision which came a few days after he decommitted from Oregon.

“For sure the staff,” Bailey said.  “Coach Beamer and Coach Satt have been really good to me.  They’ve been recruiting me since early this year.  After I decommitted from Oregon the other day they got in touch with me really quick.  They do some great things on offense over there.  I know they are building something special.”

Going into his senior season Bailey had thrown for 6200 yards and 71 touchdowns. Throwing the ball is what he does best, and he feels that will play out well in Satterfield’s offense.

“I think there are a lot of things,” Bailey said.  “I think Coach Satterfield is a great play caller, great developer.  He’s got some good guys coming in, so we’ll have a good QB room.  It will be decent competition.  I think with me being a natural passer, I think I will fit well in the system.”

Bailey grew up in a SEC family as his father played at Auburn. Earlier this year his coach at Gordo High, Ryan Lolley, said in his opinion USC would be an excellent home for his talented quarterback

“South Carolina is a great place. They’ve got a lot of tradition and history, and the people love it there. It’s a great school,” Lolley said. “I don’t think anybody goes wrong with that choice for sure. I think anybody would be crazy to say South Carolina isn’t a place you want to go. To me, that’s one of the top places to go. They’ve going to have the opportunity to compete for the (SEC) East, and you know if you compete for the East, that’s ultimately going to get you around that College Football Playoff. I think they are one of the top teams in the East. I think it’s a dang good place to go and play. It’s on a big stage where the fans love it.

Bailey will not enroll until the summer because he will play baseball with his team this spring. The Gamecocks now have 26 spots accounted for in their 2022 class.

OK, this is a great get, but now that's 3 QBs for this class, technically - 2 prep commitments and 1 transfer. But we're so thin at the depth, with a former GA and a FCS transfer getting substantial starts this past season. And now that FCS transfer is transferring elsewhere. So I guess it was needed. But this certainly looks like a good one....

The way Beamer is going about this, we may be good, quicker than we thought.  If he can continue to hit the portal for needs as a stopgap, while recruiting, we may just have something.  One of the most important things about doing anything is to have a plan, and stick to your plan.  I'm not sure about Satterfield, but Beamer seems to be sticking to his plan, and I will try to patiently wait to see it come to fruition.
