Gamecocks pick-up there second commit of the day & now has five for the 2019 class: Georgia Military College defensive end Devontae Davis 6'5" 250lbs.

Davis was not a heavily recruited prospect coming out of high school and went to Georgia Military last fall with the hope of improving his recruiting stock. In nine games as a freshman last season he recorded 15 tackles with 5 sacks.

Davis continues USC’s long of success in recruiting at Georgia Military. Current starting left tackle Dennis Daley and incoming defensive tackle Jabari Ellis are two of the Gamecocks more recent takes from Bert Williams’ program.

Davis is originally out of Silver Bluff High School in Aiken, S.C.

“It felt like home,” he said of South Carolina. “I just truly love the school and staff.”

The summer before his senior season, Davis worked out for the Gamecocks coaches at the Will Muschamp Football Camp. Former offensive line coach Shawn Elliott put Davis through the paces in position drills, but Davis is committed to play defensive end for the Gamecocks.

“I’ve known this is where I wanted to be since high school,” he said, “So it was me just getting academically right, so I could make this commitment.”

According to 247Sports, he was the No. 186 weakside defensive end in the Class of 2017. As a freshman at Georgia Military, Davis had 13 tackles and 5 sacks over six games.

South Carolina has signed two prospects out of Georgia Military over the last two recruiting cycles: Offensive tackle Dennis Daley in 2017 and defensive tackle Jabari Ellis in 2018.

ESPN National Recruiting Analyst Praises D. Davis Pickup

Thought it was interesting for a national guy to think highly of an under the radar JUCO recruit, that came out of nowhere for most of us. This tweet gives some of the people out there that care about stars some confidence that a non-Gamecock analyst likes the prospect.

I think this guy will develop into a really nice player. It's so hard to play as a true freshman in the SEC, so getting a guy like Davis gives you an immediate contributor to the DL for the 2019 class.
