Gamecocks land transfer guard Meechie Johnson

SPORTSTALK / April 25, 202

1650922358694.png6-2 PG Meechie Johnson left his Cleveland, OH high school for Ohio State in the 2020 class with a big, national reputation. In two years with the Buckeyes, he did not meet the expectations cast upon him by the national recruiting networks. Now, new USC coach Lamont Paris will get the chance to get the best out of Johnson who announced on Twitter Monday afternoon he is transferring to the Gamecocks.

Johnson made an official visit to USC last week. He also took official visits to Pitt, DePaul and LSU.

Johnson played in 43 games in his two seasons in Columbus. His career averages were 2.2 points and just under one rebound and one assist per game. He actually reclassified to the 2020 class, graduated early and joined the Buckeyes for the second half of the ’20 season when he played in 17 games.

Johnson suffered a torn ACL during his sophomore season of high school and worked his way back to become one of the top point guards nationally in his class. He is the third transfer Paris has taken from the portal following 6-5 Hayden Brown and 6-5 Troy Boynton. As things stand now, the Gamecocks have nine on their roster leaving four more spots open.
