The 6-foot-2, 172-pound prospect from C.E. Murray High School in Greeleyville, S.C. is the No. 19-rated prospect in the state for the 2018 recruiting cycle. He visited on Saturday for junior day.
Brian Smith, Rush’s former high school coach, who was recently hired at Blythewood (S.C.) High School had the following to say
“When I first got to C.E. Murray, he was in the eighth grade. At the time, as a varsity staff, we also coached the eighth graders that year. … I’ve known him for four years and coach him for four years now and have coached him for all four years,” Smith said. “He’s been a blessing to coach. Awesome person, young man. I can’t say enough great things about the kid.
“He’s a straight-A student, National Honor Society kid. He is what he is. He’s a great human being.”
During his freshman year, Rush was Smith’s starting quarterback.
“It shows you his intelligence level. His intelligence level is off the charts and he’s kind of like having another coach on the field,” Smith said. “He studies the game, knows the game. As he got older and more developed, we started moving him around to different spots. He’s played running back, wide receiver, cornerback and safety.
“We tried to match him up against the other teams’ best players, especially when he was on defense.”
As a junior, Rush rushed for 622 yards and 12 touchdowns, to go along with 14 catches for 228 yards and 3 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 36 tackles, 2 interceptions and 4 pass breakups.
“He plays multiple positions and is equally good at all of them. He has a bright future ahead of him,” Smith said.
Where Rush plays for South Carolina is still kind of up in the air. Smith believes he could fit at either wide receiver or defensive back.
“It probably depends on his growth here in the next year or so,” Smith said. “It’s pretty crazy. He’s got size-17 feet. I’m expecting him to grow a couple of more inches taller and end up 6-4 or 6-5. If he does that, he’ll probably play on the offensive side of the ball.
“If he doesn’t and he stays at the same height he is now, who knows? He could play wide out, but he most likely will move over to the defensive side of the ball.”
Charlotte, Miami and Old Dominion also had offers on the table. South Carolina offered in January.
