Gamecocks miss out on golden opportunity Saturday, now time to move forward after the loss

Oct. 21, 2019

Gamecock lost the chance Saturday at what would have been a pretty special moment. Gamecocks cannot let the hangover turn into something more damaging to affect the season. Gamecocks had the lead into the fourth quarter against a top-10 team is very a good spot to be in. Doing so with the ball is better. But as we all know, it’s far, far from a locked-in game. It wasn't all on the bad calls.  Hit some of those deep throws and it's a different game.  Not having a legit threat outside of Edwards at WR to step up on anything other than a 4 yard swing / screen pass is hurting this offense to sustain drives.   If we can't spread the field and improve QB accuracy deep this offense is too easily defended.  DBs did ok at times but at other just looked lost and UF made the plays they needed to.

Shi is a deep threat and was open on several of those long balls.   Not sure why everyone thinks Edwards is our only playmaker.  I was glad to see Ortre in the game and know he has been working himself back into playing, but he showed he can make a play Saturday and I hope they will get him more involved. With Muse struggling to catch a ball right now, Ortre could be the possession guy we need to convert some of those third downs.  I also think the knee may have been bothering Hilinski more than he let on.  Several times when he instinctively reached for it and then quickly moved his hands when he realized what he was doing.  Can't help but wonder if that is why he missed on those long throws if he was concerned about getting hit and rushed his throw.

I noticed Hilinski reaching for his knee a few times as well.

Yeah my point was a little misleading.   It’s not that I think Edwards is our only capable playmaker but he’s the only one we consistently get involved.   Missing Shi being open or simply over throwing him isn’t helping him to be a threat.  I do think Edwards is the only WR that other teams have to game plan around.   When Edwards comes out of the game our offense most often shows that immediately.  Regardless who’s out there RH needs to hit a higher % of those passes down field, especially where the WRs are breaking open.
