Ridge View defensive end Damani Staley picked up his first college offer.
South Carolina coach Will Muschamp offered Staley on a visit to Ridge View High School on Friday. Muschamp and assistant coach Kurt Roper made several stops to Midlands high schools Friday.
"I’m just thankful to get my first offer and it being from USC," Staley said. "It is very special to me especially, because I love my hometown that I grew up in."
Staley had a breakout season junior season and was named The State’s Midlands Defensive Player of the Year. The 6-foot-2, 190 pounder racked up 88 tackles and led the Midlands with 21 sacks.
Staley also attended the U.S. Army All-American combine earlier this month in San Antonio, Texas. He plays defensive end but is projected to play outside linebacker in college.
"Coach Muschamp and coach Roper sat down and watched three plays of him and said we got to have him," Ridge View coach Perry Parks said. "It is good for him and for the program to get a big time offer like that. I’m very excited to see how he develops. He has all the tools to be a successful."
Parks said Clemson assistant coach Brandon Streeter also visited this week to talk to Staley but no offer was made.
Staley’s father, Duce, was a standout at Airport who went on to a successful college career at South Carolina and played 10 seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Duce Staley is the running backs coach for the Eagles.
