Gamecocks offer 2020 DE
On Friday, 2020 defensive end Jacolbe Cowan took his second visit to South Carolina. This time, coach Will Muschamp and defensive line coach Lance Thompson didn’t let him leave without an offer.
“The visit was great the staff was very hospitable and showed a lot of love,” Cowan said. “I got to see the football facilities, tour campus, talk to academic advisors and see what goes on in the academic building.”
Cowan is a high school freshman.
Gamecocks coaches made their offer to Cowan during a meeting in Muschamp’s office.
“It meant a lot, especially since the offer came from coach Muschamp,” Cowan said. “It definitely showed me how interested they are and how they want to develop a relationship with me throughout my high school career.”
Cowan is a 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end from Providence Day School in Charlotte, N.C. He visited last fall for the Georgia game.
“I thought the game day atmosphere was incredible,” he said. “The fans were great and all you can see is garnet and black in Columbia on game day.”
Clemson, Georgia and North Carolina also had Cowan for visits this year. Georgia, Iowa State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin have offered.
Class standing
On paper, South Carolina’s 4-man 2018 recruiting class won’t blow you away. Player rankings aren’t high and three of the occupied positions aren’t the least bit sexy. For most folks, it’s hard to get excited about an offensive tackle, guard or center.
Given the success offensive line coach Eric Wolford had during his only other season at South Carolina, one must feel pretty confident about where that position group is headed, even if the recruiting rankings aren’t reflective.
According to the 247Sports composite, South Carolina has the No. 36-ranked class in 2018. The Gamecocks are eighth among SEC teams.
Rivals has the class ranked 34th. Offensive tackle Maxwell Iyama is a 4-star prospect on Rivals. Everywhere else, he’s listed as a 3-star.
Wide receiver Darius Rush, center Hank Manos and guard LaMarius Benson are consensus 3-star prospects.
Two more 2018 updates
Gavin Oliver of TheClemsonInsider recently caught up with two 2018 targets that are on the South Carolina and Clemson recruiting boards.
We’ll start with 3-star defensive tackle Darnell Jefferies, who’s from Covington, Ga., and has been to both schools multiple times over the past month or so. Jefferies, according to Oliver, will return to Clemson this weekend for the spring game.
“Right now everybody’s pretty equal,” Jefferies said. “I’m just trying to keep my head focused on my football career.”
For a guy who considers all suitors as equal, it’s hard to think he’s not leaning towards the Tigers. This will be his fourth trip to Clemson in a little over a month.
The other, 3-star running back Lyn-J Dixon, isn’t in a big rush to make his decision. A 5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect from Taylor County, Ga., Dixon has offers from South Carolina, Oklahoma, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, LSU and Texas, among others.
“I’m thinking I’m going to narrow down to like top eight my third game,” Dixon said.
It would appear that Dixon is waiting to see if Clemson will offer. The Tigers are taking a similar approach with 4-star Master Teague III, one of the Gamecocks’ priority targets at running back.
