Gamecocks offer in-state WR, more on Javon Kinlaw

Sept. 20, 2016

Days after Muschamp and running backs coach Bobby Bentley were on the road to evaluate in-state talent, South Carolina offered the second-best overall prospect from Rock Hill, S.C.

The Gamecocks coaches made two stops last Friday night. The first was at District 3 Stadium to see Northwestern and Spartanburg. They checked out WR Jamario Holley, the No. 3 in-state prospect for the Class of 2019, according to 247Sports.

Calling him the No. 2 overall prospect from Rock Hill goes against conventional wisdom. Most folks wouldn’t even call Holley the best player on his team. That title goes to Clemson commitment Logan Rudolph, the 2017 DE/OLB who announced his decisionwhile wearing jorts. That deserves a round of applause, though it wasn’t as good as Isaiah Crowell’s to Georgia.

Back to the topic at hand: Holley, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound 4-star prospect, entered last Friday night with offers from Florida State, Tennessee and Kentucky. Here’s to thinking he’ll have 10 more offers by the time the city of Rock Hill wins another state championship or two at Williams-Brice Stadium.
The way things stand, when in-state wide receivers are a part of the conversation, Clemson’s plans usually are key.
Holley fits the mold of recently recruited ‘2’ wide receivers at Clemson: Artavis Scott, Ray-Ray McCloud and Amari Rodgers.

What Clemson decides to do with Holley could depend on what plays out with the top overall prospect from Rock Hill, regardless of class: 4-star receiver Derion Kendrick. Kendrick was one of the main attractions at South Pointe High School’s game against Mallard Creek High School.

Muschamp and Bentley, of course, checked out Kendrick and other prospects in that loaded contest. It also was worth a trip up Interstate 85 for Clemson co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Jeff Scott.

More on Javon Kinlaw

A few South Carolina fans couldn’t help but wonder why Javon Kinlaw said he was “100 percent” with his commitment. It’s Alabama, for crying out loud.

Though nothing is set for Kinlaw until he’s signed in February, it is hard to see him veer too far off course from the plan he set in motion in January. Rarely do prospects who are placed at a junior college by one Power 5 program flip to another, especially when the original school still wants him.

Kinlaw’s situation is somewhat unique. For lack of a better way to describe it, he dropped out of high school to get his GED so he could enroll at Mississippi’s Jones County Junior College in January and be ready to enroll at South Carolina next summer.

It was Muschamp’s idea. Kinlaw, obviously, bought into it.

With the Monday development, it’s no wonder South Carolina defensive line coach Lance Thompson already has made a trip to Mississippi to see Kinlaw play under the Thursday night JUCO lights. That served as a reminder to Kinlaw that he is a priority for the Gamecocks in 2017.

The former All-American from Goose Creek (S.C.) High School has been committed to South Carolina for about nine months, but this is Alabama we’re talking about. As long as a potential official visit to Tuscaloosa hangs in the balance, hang on tight.

Claxton’s official visit to South Carolina

Phil Kornblut caught up with 3-star SF Nick Claxton, who took an official visit last weekend to South Carolina.
“They were really the first high major school to recruit me, and they’ve consistently been there for two years,” Claxton said of South Carolina. “They really want me.”

The 6-foot-9, 195-pound prospect from Legacy Charter in Greenville, S.C., also shared the plan Gamecocks basketball coach Frank Martin has for him.

“(Martin) says I’m real versatile, and they need a player like me that can affect the games in a lot of different ways. And he wants to help me maximize my potential. I like it a lot, and it’s going to make my decision even harder.”

Florida State already has hosted him on an official visit earlier this month. Trips to Georgia, Baylor and N.C. State also are scheduled.
