Gamecocks opens as more than two-touchdown favorite against Vanderbilt

Gamecocks coming off a dishearting upset loss against Tennessee on the road. Now the Gamecocks come home as a heavy favorite against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Will Muschamp’s squad opened as a 16-point favorite against a Derek Mason-led team that has struggled through much of this season. The over-under is 52.

Gamecocks stand at 3-5 and  fall to 2-4 in the SEC, while the Commodores are 2-5 and 1-3, off a bye following an upset of Missouri. The Gamecocks are 4-4 against the spread, while the Vandy is 1-6.

The Gamecocks have won 10 in a row in the series dating back to 2008, when the Gamecocks had 100 more yards but turned it over three times. Last year’s matchup was one of Gamecocks best games of the season, as the Gamecocks held down an efficient Commodores attack in a comfortable win.

Okay, hear me out on this.

We had a nice run against UNC and in opening games (the TAMU loss that started the Spurrier downward spiral being the exception), then bucked both trends by losing in the opener this year. We were 3-0 against UT under Boom (and he was 7-0) and we got gobsmacked. Boom was 3-0 against Mizzou and lost bad this year.

OTOH, we beat UGA for the first time under Boom (Muschamp was actually 1-6 against his alma mater counting his time at UF) and easily ended the five game losing streak to UK.

So what does it all mean? It means that this is an Opposite year, where everything reverses trends.

It means that we have reson to be VERY concerned with Vandy, where we have a 10 game win streak. And against App State - we have a 9 game win streak against non-Power Five opponents, dating back to the loss to The Citadel in 2015.

But now for the good news. We are 0-5 all-time against TAMU, so that should be a W. And we have lost 5 straight to Clemson, same thing. If we go 5-7 but beat TAMU, Clemson, UGA and UK, I am okay with that.
Didn't you say you'd ban yourself for a month if SC went 5-7 after you predicted 10+ wins?
