Gamecocks options at quarterback in next class

April 03, 2018

One of the top South Carolina recruiting targets for the Class of 2019 came off the board on Tuesday when 3-star quarterback Garrett Shrader committed to Mississippi State.

Seven days ago, the Gamecocks appeared to be in great shape for Shrader, who was preparing for a two-day trip to Starkville, Miss., to visit with the Bulldogs and coach Joe Moorhead. That trip, according to Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports, sealed the deal.

The relationship between Shrader (Charlotte, N.C.) and Moorhead dates back nearly a year. On June 4, Shrader camped at Penn State and was offered while Moorhead was on staff as offensive coordinator.

Ten days later, Shrader attended camp at South Carolina and was offered by then-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper.

On Dec. 2, just days after Moorhead was hired at Mississippi State, Shrader had an offer from the Bulldogs. Though South Carolina won the total visit count and had him on campus for the most recent visit, Shrader is now on board with the Bulldogs.

Where do the Gamecocks turn now?

Fortunately, for coach Will Muschamp, offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon and quarterbacks coach Dan Werner, Shrader wasn’t the only 2019 quarterback who was on campus last weekend.

Four-star prospect Ryan Hilinski (Orange, Calif.) arrived in Columbia late Thursday night and stuck around through the spring game on Saturday afternoon. South Carolina currently occupies a spot on his top-7 list, which also includes Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon.

The next round of cuts will be made after Hilinski wraps up some visits later this month. After he reaches that top 3, a commitment is expected to follow in late May.

South Carolina continues to be in a strong position for Hilinski and with the news from Tuesday, it would be hard to imagine a final 3 that does not include the Gamecocks.

Taulia Tagovailoa, a 3-star recruit from Alabaster, Ala., could take an official visit to South Carolina later this month. However, it’s widely believed that he’ll eventually join his brother, Tua, and commit to Alabama.

South Carolina has offered at least three other 2019 quarterbacks: 4-star propsects Sam Howell (Monroe, N.C.) and Taisun Phommachanh (Avon, Conn.), as well as 3-star recruit Jacob Conover (Chandler, Ariz.).

The Gamecocks haven’t had much involvement with Howell since Werner was hired. Phommachanh visited last month, but he has several high-profile suitors.

Expect Muschamp and staff. to put the full-court press on Hilinski, who’s scheduled to return to Georgia in a couple of weeks. According to the 247Sports composite, Hilinski is ranked as the No. 8 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2019.
