Spring Practice Report Number 12
COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 5, 2012) – The University of South Carolina football squad worked out at Williams-Brice Stadium on Thursday afternoon. It was practice no. 12 of the 15 spring practices scheduled for the squad.
The team used part of the practice to go 11-on-11.
“Damario Jeffery got his first interception as a Gamecock in the scrimmage today,” said head coach Steve Spurrier following the workout. “A lot people thought it couldn’t be done, but he did it. So it was encouraging to see. Damario has had a good spring. Right now he’s one of our starting inside linebackers.
“Dylan Thompson had a good drive,” continued the Head Ball Coach. “He had three or four passes in his drive, which was probably the highlight. Damiere Byrd caught a long one from Tanner McEvoy. That was the offense’s two highlights. Other than that there wasn’t much going on for the offense. But nobody got hurt. It was a good practice today and we’ll get ready to go again next week.”
Coach Spurrier seemed to be more upbeat on his quarterbacks’ play. “Connor (Shaw) has been doing ok. Dylan and Seth (Strickland) have been doing pretty well. We’ve just been playing a lot of guys and it hasn’t been real pretty. But that’s ok. We’ll try to get better next week and put on a good spring game next Saturday. Hopefully we’ll have a good crowd. We’ll introduce the seniors from the 2011 team. It should be a big, fun day next Saturday, April 14.”
Jared Shaw continued to impress this spring. After returning an interception for a touchdown in last Saturday’s scrimmage, he blocked a punt today. “Jared had a heck of a play. Hadn’t seen a play like that since I’ve been coach here. He came around the corner, stretched his hands out perfectly and blocked the punt, picked it up and ran for a touchdown. He’s certainly going to get every chance (to play).”
Coach Spurrier indicated that Marcus Lattimore’s rehab is going well. “We think he’ll be as good as ever.”
The team will not practice again until next Tuesday, April 10. That practice is slated for 4:15 p.m. at the Bluff Road practice fields. All practices are open to the public.
