Gamecocks preparing for major recruiting event

Feb. 14, 2017

Up next for South Carolina

South Carolina has already hosted a handful of significant recruiting functions in 2017. The next one is a junior day on Saturday, Feb. 25.

It figures to be a busy day for the Gamecocks, who also open spring practice that day.

Several notable 2018 recruits have already confirmed with SEC Country that they’ll be on campus for the junior day event:

LB/DE Eli Adams (Rock Hill, S.C.)

For South Pointe High School, a back-to-back-to-back state championship-winning program, Adams has been a force off the edge. The 6-foot, 220-pound prospect is a little undersized for the defensive end position at the next level, so his future could be at linebacker. Adams worked out at linebacker for the Gamecocks last summer during Muschamp Camp.

Along with South Carolina, East Carolina and Maryland have also offered Adams, who’s taken several visits to Columbia over the last year or so.

OLB Zakoby McClain (Valdosta, Ga.)

The 4-star linebacker from Valdosta High School quickly became a personal favorite of this author during Georgia Junior Bowl practice in December. McClain is listed as the No. 23-ranked outside linebacker in the Class of 2018.

McClain (6-2, 205) still has some growing to do, if he’s going to be able to hold up as an outside linebacker at the next level, but that shouldn’t be much of an issue. Frankly, if there are 22 outside linebackers who are better than he is, the position is loaded for 2018.

WR Jacoby Pinckney (Roebuck, S.C.)

Pinckney is one of four 4-star prospects from the state of South Carolina in 2019. The 6-foot-3, 192-pound sophomore is the No. 13-ranked wide receiver in the country and the No. 83 overall player.

With his size and catch radius, Pinckney profiles favorably toward South Carolina wide receivers Bryan Edwards and OrTre Smith. South Carolina, Duke, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest have offered. Plenty more are on the way for Pinckney, who attends Dorman High School.

WR Darius Rush (Greeleyville, S.C.)

South Carolina was the first Power 5 offer for Rush, who also lists Charlotte, Miami of Ohio and Old Dominion among his suitors. A 6-foot-2, 172-pound 3-star recruit from C.E. Murray High School, Rush is listed as the No. 134-rated wide receiver.

LB Channing Tindall (Columbia, S.C.)

South Carolina will have to fend off a couple of SEC rivals to keep Tindall from leaving the area. The 3-star linebacker has quietly become one of the top prospects from the state’s 2018 haul. He’s now listed among the state’s top-10 prospects.

Auburn and Georgia probably won’t be the last SEC offers to roll through for Tindall, who’s the No. 32-ranked outside linebacker in the country (Rivals). The Dawgs hosted him for a visit this past weekend.

Offers out

Speaking of prospects receiving interest from Auburn and Georgia, South Carolina just tossed its hat into the ring for 4-star outside linebacker Quay Walker on Monday. The No. 15-ranked outside linebacker in the Class of 2018 is a former Crisp County High School teammate of Markaviest Bryant, an Auburn signee.

Auburn and Georgia appear to be the front runners for the 2018 prospect from Cordele, Ga., who potentially profiles at South Carolina’s “Buck” position, which is a hybrid outside linebacker, defensive end spot.

Later that evening, the Gamecocks offered 2018 cornerback Jaycee Horn, an unranked prospect from Alpharetta (Ga.) High School.
