December 09, 2017
South Carolina quarterback commitment Dakereon Joyner won the state’s Mr. Football Award on Saturday afternoon in Myrtle Beach.
The 4-star from Fort Dorchester High School (North Charleston, S.C.) will enroll at South Carolina next month.
The Gamecocks haven’t had a Mr. Football since wide receiver Shaq Roland won the award in 2011. Roland was the fourth in a run on South Carolina players at the position, which began with Stephon Gilmore (2008) and continued with Marcus Lattimore (2009) and Jadeveon Clowney (2010).
Joyner completed 140 of 207 passes for 2,414 yards with 35 touchdowns in 2017. He also totaled 1,031 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.
As a junior, he passed for 3,642 yards with 44 touchdowns and rushed for 1,089 yards and 12 scores. Afterward, Joyner was named the South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year.
Fort Dorchester won its first-ever state championship during his sophomore season in 2015. That season, Joyner threw for 3,202 yards with 33 touchdowns, to go along with 1,058 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns.
In eight games as a freshman, he passed for 532 yards and rushed for 231 yards.
Joyner will play in the Shrine Bowl next week before reporting to New Orleans for the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl.
